SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men’s basketball team came up just short on two shots in the final seconds of a 65-63 loss to the College of Charleston on Thursday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena. Tim Johnson set career highs with 21 points and 17 rebounds.
Wofford is 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while College of Charleston is 13-3 overall and 5-1 in the SoCon. The Terriers were led by Tim Johnson with 21 points and 17 rebounds, while Noah Dahlman added 19 points and seven rebounds. Jason Dawson scored a career-high 16 points. For the Cougars, Dustin Scott had 12 points, followed by Andrew Goudelock and Donavan Monroe with ten each. Jeremy Simmons led Charleston with eight rebounds.
“It was a great Southern Conference basketball game,” said head coach Mike Young. “We have great admiration for the quality of play from Charleston. Coach Cremins is one of the all-time bests. They were just two points better than we were tonight. I just told our guys in the locker room that I could not ask for one more thing from them in terms of effort and in terms of giving us everything in their tank. The Cougars we just a little bit better than us on this given night.”
The game was tied at 6-6 at 17:20 after two three pointers for Wofford by Jason Dawson. A three pointer for the Cougars by Marcus Hammond gave the College of Charleston a 19-10 lead at the 10:43 mark. The Cougars were able to push the lead to eleven points at 30-19 after a lay-up by Andrew Goudelock, however at the end of the first half the Terriers were able to trim the lead to 34-28.
The second half got off to a slow start, and at the 14:48 mark the College of Charleston had a ten point lead at 42-32. The lead reached eleven points three minutes later, then with 8:49 on the clock a three-pointer by Tony White, Jr. gave the Cougars a 55-45 lead.
With 6:43 remaining in the second half, Tony White, Jr. hit a jumper for a 57-47 lead. Wofford then responded with two lay-ups from Noah Dahlman and one from Tim Johnson to cut the lead to four points. Dahlman then added two free throws to make it a 57-55 game with just 3:49 left.
The Cougars added a basket, but after a jumper from Jason Dawson and a lay-up by Noah Dahlman at 2:23, the game was tied at 59-59. With the game then tied at 61 each, Marcus Hammond hit a three-pointer at 1:07 for a 64-61 lead. Wofford pulled within one after a bucket from Tim Johnson. Andrew Goudelock made one of two free throws with just 16 seconds on the clock and Tim Johnson got the rebound on the miss. The Terriers had a couple shots at the basket as time expired, but they did not fall and the Cougars had the 63-65 victory.
Wofford shot 40.3% from the floor and 29.4% from three. The Terriers were 50.0% from the line. The Cougars shot 49.1% from the floor and 23.5% from behind the arc. College of Charleston was 83.3% from the free throw line. Wofford had a 40-35 lead on the boards, but the Cougars blocked seven shots.
Wofford was without guard Junior Salters, who missed his fifth game due to injury, and Corey Godzinski. Godzinski will miss approximately four weeks due to a broken hand. Noah Dahlman has scored in double-figures in the last twelve games. Wofford returned home for the first time in nearly a month, as the last home game was on December 17, 2008. The crowd of 1,712 was the largest home crowd of the season for Wofford.
The Terriers remain at home this weekend as they host The Citadel on Saturday as part of a double-header. The Wofford women open the day at 3:00 against College of Charleston, followed by the men against the Bulldogs at 7:00 pm.
