Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior Lakiah Hyson scored 19 points to lead the UNC Greensboro Spartans to a 68-56 win over Wofford in Southern Conference women’s basketball action on Monday.
The Terriers took a quick 4-0 lead to start the game with two consecutive baskets by sophomore Mahagony Williams. The two teams battled, keeping the score close until UNC Greensboro went on a 10 point run to take a 27-19 lead at the five-minute mark. The Terriers could not overcome the deficit and UNC Greensboro headed into the half with a 34-28 lead.
In the second half, the Spartans struck first and rendered the Terriers scoreless for almost five minutes into the period. A three-pointer from Maddie Helms broke the dry spell, and another trey from Helms put the Terriers within 10 points. Wofford made a run again in the last three minutes of the game, but it was not enough as the Spartans went on to take the game, 68-56.
UNC Greensboro was led by junior Lakia Hyson’s 19 points, while sophomore Monique Floyd added 18 for the Spartans. Kendra Smith grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Spartans.
Natalie Gramblin led the Terriers with 13 points, with Maddie Helms adding 12 total points, all from beyond the arc. Senior Liz Miller led the Terriers in rebounds with 9, while also adding eight points and four assists.
With the loss, Wofford falls to 3-14 on the season and 1-8 in the Southern Conference while UNC Greensboro improves to 7-12 overall and 4-6 in league play, while also snapping its seven-game losing streak. The Terriers will hit the road again this weekend, traveling to Chattanooga to take on the Lady Mocs at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24.
