Parker Earns Freshman of the Year at SoCon Cross Country Championships

ELON, N.C. – Freshman Trey Parker earned men’s Freshman of the Year honors to lead the Wofford cross country teams at the 2009 Southern Conference Championship, hosted by Elon University.

Parker crossed the finish line in a time of 26:04.19, setting a new school record for the fourth time in as many races en route to being named the SoCon Freshman of the Year. Parker, who hails from Sumter, S.C., edged Appalachian State freshman Burk Staub by less than a second to claim the honor.

Despite the 18th place finish and record time by Parker, the Terrier men finished 11th in the race. Senior Bryan Brooks ran the 8K course in a time of 27:30.78, and fellow senior Paul Vecchione ran a personal best time of 28:00.27.

Appalachian State claimed the men’s title with four runners finishing in the top 10 and a total of 44 points. The title marks the fifth consecutive for the Mountaineer men. Chattanooga junior Emmanuel Kirwa won the men’s individual title with a time of 25:00.38 on the course.

The Terrier women finished 10th in the 5K event, placing ahead of both Georgia Southern and The Citadel.

A trio of freshman led the Wofford women, with Shelby Harris recording a personal best time of 19:40.64 to pace the Terriers. Andrea Kelsey turned in a time of 19:49.75 in the race, and Niki Klasnic clocked in at 20:34.89.

The Samford women placed two runners in the top 10 and four in the top 20 to win the women’s team title with 74 points, taking its first title in only its second appearance at the championships. Appalachian State freshman Brittney Caudle won the women’s individual title with a time of 17:47.32 on the 5K course.
