Wofford vs. Western Carolina Box Score

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Junior Kendra Carroll led three players in double-digit points as Western Carolina earned a 71-65 win over Wofford in Southern Conference women’s basketball action on Friday. Strong defense and four players in double-digit scoring helped keep the Terriers in the game in the first league tilt of the season.

Wofford scored the first points off a jumper from Mahagony Williams, but the Catamounts took a quick 3-2 lead with a three-pointer from Jessica Jackson. The Terriers responded with an 8-0 scoring run, holding the Catamounts scoreless until the 17-minute mark. Wofford was able to maintain the lead until the 12-minute mark when the Catamounts took over. Western Carolina would lead by as many as ten points before heading into the break with a 36-28 lead.

The second half saw the Terriers outscore the Catamounts 37 to 35. A quick layup from Heather Swayne put the Catamounts up by 10 to begin the half, but within four minutes Wofford was able to cut the lead to a mere two points, helped by seven points from junior Maddie Helms. Two minutes later, however, the Catamounts were back on top with a nine point lead, which they extended to as many as 14 before the Terriers responded.

Wofford would cut the lead to six with 8:19 remaining in the half, and was able to get within four points with seconds remaining on the clock, but fell just short, with Western Carolina claiming the 71-65 win.

Kendra Carroll led the Catamounts with 18 points while junior Emily Clarke added 17 and senior Jessica Jackson contributed 11. Three Catamounts recorded six rebounds apiece, with Clarke, Heather Swayne and Brittany Ferguson each grabbing six boards.

Wofford was led by junior Maddie Helms, who knocked down 19 points, including shooting 4-6 from beyond the arc. Senior Kelly Dwyer added 14 points and led the team with five blocks and four assists. Senior Kathlyn Varno tallied 13 and fellow senior Natalie Gramblin recorded 10 in the loss. Junior Mahagony Williams led the team with 12 rebounds and added eight points and two blocks.

With the win, Western Carolina improves to 1-2 on the season and opens conference play 1-0. Wofford falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the Southern Conference. The Terriers will not face a league opponent again until December 5 when they travel to Samford. Wofford will next make the trip to Washington, D.C. to visit Georgetown. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 28.
