Men’s Basketball Drops 77-76 Decision To Appalachian State

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s basketball team returned home after a six-game road trip and were defeated 77-76 by Appalachian State on Monday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Terriers had a chance to tie the game with one second on the clock, but the shot by Corey Godzinski was just inches inside the three-point line.

Wofford is 4-6 overall and 0-2 in the Southern Conference, while Appalachian State is 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Noah Dahlman led the Terriers with 25 points and Jamar Diggs added 19 points with Tim Johnson grabbing nine rebounds. The Mountaineers were led by Donald Sims with 25 points and Isaac Butts had a double-double with eleven points and 13 rebounds.

The Mountaineers scored first and had an early 9-3 lead. Two three-pointers by Jamar Diggs cut the lead to 12-11 at the 12:59 mark, but the Mountaineers responded with the next five points which included a three by Jeremi Booth. A lay-up by Tim Johnson and a three by Jamar Diggs again cut the lead to one at 19-18 with 10:15 on the clock.

Over the next six minutes, the Mountaineers were able to build a 34-22 lead with a 15-4 run. Noah Dahlman cut the lead to ten with two free throws, but Marcus Wright answered with a three for a 13-point lead, the largest of the game. The Terriers then used an 11-0 run over the final 2:22 that included threes from Cameron Rundles and Jason Dawson to make it a 37-35 score at the half.

To open the second half, Wofford used a jumper by Jamar Diggs to tie the game at 37 each. Appalachian State scored the next six points, but back-to-back threes by Junior Salters and Brad Loesing tied the game at 43. The Mountaineers regained the lead, but Junior Salters tied the game again at 49 with 10:55 on the clock.

Corey Godzinski added a fast-break dunk to take a 51-49 lead with 10:33 remaining in the game. The Mountaineers quickly tied the game again and pushed the lead back to four points. After cutting the lead back to two with a lay-up from Tim Johnson, Appalachian State ran the lead to eight points at 63-55 with 4:55 remaining. With 1:37 left the Mountaineers still had an eight point lead at 71-63. However a lay-up by Noah Dahlman and a three by Brad Loesing cut it to three points with 46 seconds on the clock.

Kellen Brand made two free throws for Appalachian State with 27 seconds, but Jamar Diggs answered with a lay-up and free throw to make it a 73-71 game five seconds later. Donald Sims hit four straight free throws to give the Mountaineers a 77-71 advantage with only twelve seconds left. Wofford had a three by Cameron Rundles and Corey Godzinksi hit a jumper with his foot just over the three point line with one second on the clock that would have tied it, but instead the Terriers were defeated 77-76.

Wofford shot 45.3% from the floor and 34.6% from behind the arc. From the free throw line, the Terriers were 69.2%. The Mountaineers shot 64.3% overall, including 80.0% in the second half, and were 50.0% from three. They were 62.5% from the line. Appalachian State had a 34-23 lead on rebounds. The Terriers had only four turnovers to the Mountaineers’ twenty. Wofford had eleven steals on the night.

Junior Salters reached 1,000 career points with a three pointer to tie the game in the second half. He added two more points in the game for 1,002 total points. He is the 40th person to reach 1,000 career points at Wofford.

The Terriers remain at home for the second of three-straight home games with a contest against Navy on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
