Wofford vs. Chattanooga Box Score
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Despite a mere one-point deficit at the end of the first half, the Wofford women’s basketball team fell to Chattanooga, 89-71 in Southern Conference action Wednesday.
The Terriers put the first points on the board off a layup from Mahagony Williams. Chattanooga answered with a three-pointer from Jenaya Wade-Fray and took a lead of its own at 5-4 at the 18:34 mark. Wofford regained the lead less than a minute later and continued to control much of the first half, leading by as many as six points and maintaining the advantage until a breakaway layup from Wade-Fray tied the score at 32 with 3:15 remaining in the half.
Another layup from Wade-Fray gave the Mocs a 34-32 advantage, which they stretched to a four-point lead at 39-35 before a three-pointer from Ashley Kroker sparked a Terrier run. Wofford held a brief 40-39 lead before a two-pointer from Kayla Christopher with 24 seconds remaining gave the advantage to the Mocs heading into the break.
The two teams traded baskets to open the second half, keeping the score close until a three-pointer from Wade-Fray sparked an 8-0 run that put the Mocs up 51-42. The run gave Chattanooga the momentum as the Mocs took advantage of a few Terrier miscues to extend their lead to as many as 20 points en route to an 89-71 lead.
Head coach Edgar Farmer commented on the game, "I thought we played a really strong first half. Both teams were doing a great job, a lot of back and forth scoring, but in the second half the Lady Mocs made a run that we just couldn't respond to. The second half was the difference in the game. I was proud of the way our basketball team played tonight. We just didn't execute in the right moments in the second half. Overall, I thought we played with great intensity."
Jenaya Wade-Fray led four players in double-digit scoring with 18 points while also adding five steals. Redshirt freshman Michelle Davis added 17 points, sophomore Kori Penland contributed 14 and freshman Kayla Christopher recorded 13 points in the win. Davis led the team with eight rebounds.
The Terriers were led by junior Mahagony Williams, who recorded 18 points and eight rebounds. Senior Natalie Gramblin added 10 points and four assists while senior Kelly Dwyer paced the team with four steals and contributed four assists. Junior Ashley Kroker added nine points in the loss.
With the win, Chattanooga improves to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the Southern Conference while Wofford falls to 1-7 on the season and 0-3 in league play. The Terriers continue their stretch of road games with a trip to Davidson, N.C. to take on the Wildcats. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. on December 13.
