BOONE, N.C. – Despite an eight-point halftime lead, the Wofford women’s basketball team was unable to pick up a Southern Conference win against Appalachian State as the Mountaineers’ Brittany Mixon dropped in 16 points in the second half to lead the Mountaineers to a 72-68 win Wednesday night.
The Terriers controlled the first half, opening the game with a 9-4 run. A string of five consecutive made three-pointers from the 16:00 mark to the 10:30 mark gave the Terriers their largest lead of the half at 21-20.
Senior Liz Miller, junior Natalie Gramblin and sophomore Maddie Helms combined to help the Terriers to 80% shooting from beyond the arc, with Miller and Gramblin making two of two and Helms knocking down two of three. The Terriers shot 52.2% from the field in the opening half, and Helms led the team with 10 points, including shooting 4-4 from the free-throw line.
In the second half, the Wofford offense broke down, shooting only 29.9% while the Mountaineers stepped up to shoot 54.5% in the second. The Terriers did manage to increase their lead to 13 points, their largest lead of the game, but Appalachian State’s Mixon scored six of her 16 points in the first five minutes of the half, and a Mountaineer 14-3 run cut the Terrier lead to a mere two points (49-51) with 10 minutes remaining.
A minute later, a three-pointer from Sam Ramirez gave the Mountaineers their first lead of the game at 58-56, and, after a brief tie at 62, App State would maintain the lead for the rest of the game before taking the 72-68 win.
The Mountaineers were led by Mixon’s 20 points and 14 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the season. Ramirez and Sade Means each added 15 points and Frances Hernandez contributed 11 points in the win. Appalachina State shot 51.7% from the field and out-rebounded the Terriers 40-33.
Gramblin led Wofford with 17 total points, while Miller added 11 and Helms knocked down 10. Kate Dempsey topped the Terriers with eight rebounds and two blocks, while Miller grabbed six steals. Junior Kelly Dwyer led the team with four assists. The Terriers shot 9-18 from three-point range and 68% from the free throw line, including a 12-14 performance in the second half.
With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 7-17 overall and 6-9 in the Southern Conference while Wofford falls to 4-19 on the season and 2-13 in league play. The Terriers head to Charleston, S.C. on Saturday, February 14 to take on the College of Charleston in a game that has been moved to 12:30 p.m.
