CHARLESTON, S.C. – A hot shooting College of Charleston team led by 14 points from senior Nikki Williams claimed a 75-53 win over the Wofford women’s basketball team on Saturday, February 14.
The Cougars opened the game with a 9-4 run, but a three-pointer from Wofford’s Maddie Helms tied the score at 11. After another tie score at 15, the Cougars went on a 14-0 run to put them up 29-15 before the run was stopped by a free throw from Mahagony Williams followed by a layup from Liz Miller.
The Terriers had a tough time stopping Charleston’s Nikki Williams, who scored 12 total points in the first half, including 10 within a four-minute stretch. The Wofford defense stepped up in the final minutes to hold the Cougars scoreless for a three-minute period, but a late run by College of Charleston put the Cougars up 38-22 at halftime.
Wofford’s offense struggled against the Cougar defense in the first half, shooting 28% from the field. The Cougars turned in a solid performance from three-point range, with a 71.4 mark in the first half. Charleston also took advantage of the Terriers’ miscues, turning 13 turnovers into 12 points.
College of Charleston stretched its lead to 49-24 to begin the second half, doubling the Terriers’ point total within four minutes. Wofford’s Laura Depko and April Moorhouse provided a spark for the Terriers, combining for eight points and almost half of the Terrier’s buckets in the second half, but it was not enough, as the Cougars claimed the 75-53 win.
Senior Nikki Williams led the Cougars with 14 total points while Jade Hughes and Tonia Gerty each added 13 and Brooke Kotcella contributed 12. The Cougars’ 75 points marked the ninth time this season that the team has scored over 70 points.
Sophomore Mahagony Williams, senior Liz Miller and junior Natalie Gramblin each recorded nine points in the Terriers’ loss. Williams and Miller also led the team in rebounds with five apiece. Senior Laura Depko grabbed four steals for Wofford.
With the win, Charleston improves to 18-7 overall and 11-6 in Southern Conference play while the Terriers fall to 4-20 on the season and 2-14 in league play. Wofford will return home Monday, February 16 to host UNC Greensboro in a 6:00 p.m. game.
