SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite a 42-35 lead at halftime, the Wofford women’s basketball team fell to Appalachian State, 65-60 in Southern Conference action on Monday.
The Terriers took the momentum in the first half, opening the game with an 8-0 run, and extending their lead to 16-4 only five and a half minutes into the game. Wofford backed up its offensive play with strong defense, never allowing Appalachian State to come within more than four points during the entire half, and entering the break with a 42-35 advantage.
Despite shooting .483 from the field in the first, the Mountaineers could not catch up to the Terriers, who grabbed seven steals and shot 60% from the free throw line. Junior Natalie Gramblin led the offense with 11 points, while sophomore Maddie Helms added 10 in the first half alone. Appalachian State’s Frances Hernandez led all players in the first half with 16 total points, 12 of which came from three-point range.
The second half began as a defensive fight, with both teams struggling on the offensive front. After a free throw from Kelly Dwyer and a layup from Mahagony Williams to put the Terriers up 45-38, the Mountaineers went on a 20-4 run, holding the Terriers scoreless from 12:18 until two made free throws from Williams broke the dry spell at the 5:55 mark.
The Terriers were unable to recover from the deficit, pulling within three points off a layup by Helms, but a string of four Mountaineer free throws sealed the 65-60 win for Appalachian State.
Hernandez led the Mountaineers with 19 points and Canesha Edwards added 11 while Brittany Mixon recorded 10 in the winning effort. Edwards, Mixon and Sade Means each grabbed eight rebounds for Appalachian State. The Mountaineers out-rebounded the Terriers 47-39.
Gramblin led the Terriers with 13 total points, while Helms added 12. Junior Kathlyn Varno led the defense with five total rebounds, while junior Natalie Gramblin nabbed seven steals to help the Terriers to 14 team steals on 24 Mountaineer turnovers.
With the win, Appalachian State improves to 6-15 on the season and 5-7 in Southern Conference play while Wofford falls to 4-17 overall and 2-11 in league competitions. The Terriers will host cross-town rival Furman on Saturday, February 7 as part of a double header. The women’s team will kick off the action at 3:00 p.m., followed by the men as they take on Samford at 7:00 p.m.
