Miller keys victory with 22 points

ELON, N.C. – Senior Liz Miller drained 22 points, including 8-10 from the free throw line to match her career scoring high and lead the Terriers to a 56-51 win over Elon in Southern Conference action on Saturday.

Natalie Gramblin opened the game with a layup to put the Terriers on the board first. Two free throws from Liz Miller put Wofford up by four, but the Phoenix answered with a string of three good shots from the charity stripe to gain an early lead.

The next four minutes belonged to Miller, as she scored 10 straight points to give Wofford a 14-10 advantage. Elon’s Ursyla Cotton scored six points of her own to tie the score at 14, and the first half continued as a back-and-forth affair that ended with the Terriers up 25-23.

Miller led the Terriers in the first half with 14 total points. For the Phoenix, Cotton and Aiesha Harper each contributed seven points. Wofford converted 10-13 free throws in the first half, out-shooting Elon’s 8-16 to earn the two point advantage.

Wofford opened the second half with a 10-4 run to widen their lead to 35-27, but ten unanswered points from the Phoenix put them up by two with 12 minutes remaining. A string of four free throws from Miller keyed a Terrier run, and four points each from Summer Nichols and Kate Dempsey put Wofford back on top. The Terriers maintained a narrow lead for the remainder of the game, claiming a 56-51 win.

Freshman Harper led the Phoenix with 18 total points, while junior Cotton added 14 and recorded a double-double with 11 total rebounds. Cotton also notched three blocks for Elon.

Miller led the Terriers with 22 total points to set a season high for Wofford. Dwyer, Williams and Varno each grabbed six rebounds in the win.

With the loss, Elon falls to 3-24 on the season and 1-17 in the Southern Conference while Wofford improves to 5-21 overall and 3-15 in league play. The Terriers return home for their final home game on Monday, February 23 to host the Georgia Southern Eagles at 4:00 p.m. The game has been designated as the “Go Pink” matchup for the women’s basketball team, and the Terriers will also honor their seniors before game time.
