CULLOWHEE, N.C. – In its last game of the regular season, the Wofford women’s basketball team fell 77-55 to Western Carolina in Southern Conference action on Saturday.
Western Carolina opened the first half with a 13-4 scoring run, capitalizing on Terrier missed shots and eventually extending its lead to 24-9 at the 8:52 mark. The Catamount defense managed to hold the Terriers scoreless between the 12 minute and eight minute marks.
A two-point shot from Laura Depko gave the Terriers the spark they needed to put in a small run before halftime, cutting the Catamount lead to a manageable nine points.
The primary trouble spot for the Terriers in the first half came from eight team fouls, which the Catamounts converted to eight points with perfect shooting from the free throw line. Wofford was only afforded one trip to the foul line and failed to capitalize. From the field, the Catamounts only outscored the Terriers 28-27.
In the second half, Wofford continued its foul trouble, grabbing two in the first 30 seconds. The Catamounts rendered the Terriers scoreless for the first four minutes of the half until four points from Mahagony Williams broke the drought. However, the Catamount defense kept Terrier scoring sparse during the second half, while Western Carolina steadily built its own lead before claiming the 77-55 win.
The Catamounts were led by sophomore Emily Clarke’s 17 points, while senior Brooke Johnson added 14 and senior Lauren Powell also notched double-digit points with 12. Kendra Eaton led the team with nine rebounds, helping the Catamounts out-rebound the Terriers 53-38.
The Terriers had three players with eight points each to lead the team – seniors Kate Dempsey and Liz Miller and sophomore Maddie Helms. Senior Summer Nichols led the Terriers with nine rebounds and also added seven points in the loss.
With the win, Western Carolina improves to 18-11 overall and 14-6 in the Southern Conference while Wofford falls to 5-23 on the season and 3-17 in the league. The Terriers will next compete in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament on Thursday, March 5.
