March 6, 2009 – UNC Greensboro scored a season-high 83 points to open the Southern Conference tournament with an 83-64 win over the Wofford Terriers.
The first four minutes were a back-and-forth battle until a layup by Agne Girstautaite put the Spartans up 6-3. The Spartans continued to push their lead, taking a seven-point advantage with 13:26 remaining. From there, the Spartans could not be stopped, scoring 12 unanswered points in almost four minutes to take a 30-9 lead with 8:58 remaining.
A three-pointer from Kelly Dwyer broke the dry spell for the Terriers, but the Spartans answered immediately, leading by as many as 25 points in the half. The Terriers managed to hold the Spartans scoreless for the last two minutes while turning in seven points of their own to cut the deficit to 24-39 at the half.
Grimsley led the Spartans in the first half with 14 total points, while the Terriers had three players with five points each. Senior Liz Miller grabbed five rebounds in the first half to lead the team.
In the second half, Wofford scored two quick baskets to cut the Spartan lead to 11 points, but the first-half deficit proved too large to overcome. Greensboro took its biggest lead of the second half with a 21 point advantage with 2:47 remaining. Despite scoring 40 points to the Spartans’ 44 in the second half, the Terriers were unable to overcome the first-half deficit and fell 83-64.
Grimsley led the Spartans with 18 total points while Lakiah Hyson added 15 and Monique Floyd contributed 13. Ashley Mullins also notched double-digit points, with 12. Hyson also led the team in rebounds with seven.
Sophomore Mahagony Williams led four Terriers in double-digit scoring with 15 total points and notched a double-double with 10 rebounds. Junior Natalie Gramblin added 12 points and sophomore Maddie Helms knocked down 11 while senior Kate Dempsey added 10. The Terriers recorded 15 assists as a team and grabbed nine steals.
With the win, Greensboro improves to 13-17 on the season, while Wofford ends the season with a 5-24 overall record. Greensboro will advance to face top-seeded Chattanooga at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 7.
