Baseball Falls 3-2 At Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford College baseball team lost 3-2 at Samford on Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Bulldogs scored the first three runs of the game, but the Terriers battled back with runs in the sixth and eighth.

Wofford is now 3-6 on the season and 0-2 in the Southern Conference, while Samford improves to 5-5 overall and are 2-0 in the league. The Terriers were led by Konstantine Diamaduros with two hits and an RBI, while Mac Doyle added an RBI as well. Samford was led by David Schulze and Marcus Rodriguez with two hits each, while Joe Durham had two RBIs.

Each team started the game with a hit in the first inning. In the top of the second, Wofford added a single from Konstantine Diamaduros. The Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the second when Marcus Rodriguez singled and a home run by Joe Durham gave Samford a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added another run in the bottom of the third when David Schulze hit a single to score Mason Meredeth who had reached base on a double. In the top of the fifth, Wofford had two players reach on walks but were able to score.

In the top of the sixth, Wofford led off with a single from Kyle Behrendt. A double from Konstantine Diamaduros scored Behrendt to make it a 3-1 game. In the top of the eighth, Kyle Behrendt reached base on an error. Mac Doyle hit a double to left centerfield to score Behrendt and make it a 3-2 game.

Wofford went to the top of the ninth with Josh McKinney on second after a fielder’s choice and an error. Michael Gilmartin hit a sacrifice grounder to advance McKinney to third with two outs, but the Terriers were unable to bring the tying run home and were defeated 3-2.

For Wofford, starter Gus White (1-1) went five innings with seven hits allowed, three runs scored and one strikeout. John Cornely threw the final three innings and allowed just one hit with one strikeout.

Samford starter David Knapp went seven innings with five hits and one run allowed while striking out eight Terriers. Kyle Nichols threw the final two innings and allowed one run and one hit with two strikeouts.

The same teams will meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field to complete the three-game series.
