Baseball Splits Doubleheader With UNC Greensboro

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team split a doubleheader with UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored five runs in the seventh to win the first game 13-8, but the Spartans came back from down 5-0 to win the second game 7-6.

Wofford is 14-15 on the season and 5-9 in the Southern Conference. UNC Greensboro is now 11-18 and 2-11 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Kyle Behrendt with five hits on the day, while James Foster had four RBIs. The Spartans Ed Jayjack and Corey Overholtzer each had four hits.

In the first game, the Terriers opened the scoring with a two-RBI double from Kyle Behrendt in the bottom of the first. UNC Greensboro answered in the top of the second with an RBI double by Michael Wall and a two-run homer by Corey Overholtzer to take a 3-2 lead.

Wofford regained the lead in the bottom of the second with a single by Landon Bennett that scored Neil Robinette and a bunt single from Josh McKinney that scored Bennett for a 4-3 advantage.

The lead was short lived as the Spartans scored a run to tie the game in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Brent O’Berry. In the top of the fifth, Ed Jayjack hit a solo home run down the right field line to give the Spartans a 5-4 lead. The Terriers tied the game again in the bottom of the sixth when James Foster reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Neil Robinette.

The Spartans used a double from Ed Jayjack and a double from Ray Quinones to score one run in the top of the seventh and then Quinones scored on a wild pitch to take a 7-5 lead. Wofford responded in the bottom of the seventh with opening singles from Michael Gilmartin and Konstantine Diamaduros. A fielder’s choice by Mac Doyle scored one run, then a single from Landon Bennett scored another run to tie the game.

A double from James Foster scored two more runs, while a wild pitch allowed Bennett to score and the Terriers had a 9-5 advantage. Wofford added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth as Kyle Behrendt hit an RBI double, Mac Doyle had an RBI single and a wild pitch scored a runner for a 13-7 lead.

UNC Greensboro scored on a sacrifice fly from Ray Quinones in the top of the ninth, but could not cut into the lead any further and the Terriers won 13-8.

For the Terriers, starter Gus White went five innings with eight hits and five runs allowed with three strikeouts. John Cornely (2-0) threw 2.2 innings with two runs on two hits and a career-high six strikeouts. J.D. Osborne went two-thirds of an inning without a hit allowed and Drew Sheridan closed the game with one run on one hit.

UNC Greensboro starter Greg Martin threw 4.2 innings with four hits, four runs and four strikeouts. Greg Smith (3-5) went two innings with four runs on three hits. Warren Slack went two-thirds of an inning with four runs on four hits and a strikeout. Adam Daufeldt threw the final two-thirds with one run on two hits and two strikeouts.

In game two, Wofford got off to a strong start with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Two runs scored on a single by Mike McDonnell, while a double from Landon Bennett scored a run as well. A double from James Foster and a single by Josh McKinney plated the other two runs in the inning for the Terriers.

The Spartans got on the board in the top of the third with a double from Brent O’Berry to score one run. In the top of the fourth, a double by Ray Quinones scored one run and a double from Bradley Raynor added two more runs to make it a 5-4 game.

In the top of the sixth, the Spartans tied the game with a double from Alex Frederick. In the next inning, Trevor Edwards hit a single with two out to score a run and give UNC Greensboro a 6-5 lead.

For the Terriers in the bottom of the eighth, Konstantine Diamaduros singled and Kyle Behrendt reached on an error. After a sac bunt to move the runners, Neil Robinette was intentionally walked to load the bases. However the Terriers hit into a double play to end the inning.

In the top of the ninth, the Spartans added one run on a single by Trevor Edwards. Heading to the final three outs, Jake Williams walked and James Foster doubled for runners at second and third. Following a strikeout, Michael Gilmartin grounded out to score one run and move Foster to third. Wofford stranded the runner at the end of the inning with the 7-6 final score.

For the Terriers, starter Bobby DeLuria went the first 4.1 innings with seven hits and four runs allowed with three strikeouts. J.D. Osborne went two-thirds of an inning without a hit allowed. Bobby Streisel also went two-thirds of an inning with one hit, one run and a strikeout. Anthony Rowland struck out the only batter he faced. Michael Gilmartin (2-1) went the final three innings and gave up five hits with two runs scored and a strikeout.

UNC Greensboro starter Alex Shelton lasted two innings, giving up six hits and five runs with two strikeouts. Blake Hassebrock (1-0) went the next five innings, allowing five hits without a run and four strikeouts. Zach Furl went an inning and allowed one run and a hit. Greg Smith closed the game and recorded his second save of the season with one strikeout and no hits to get the final three outs.

The Spartans won the three-game series 2-1. The Friday night game was postponed due to rain, resulting in a doubleheader on Saturday. Wofford was without sophomore infielder Alex Lee, who has a broken bone in his foot and will miss approximately four weeks.

The Terriers will hit the road this week for a pair of mid-week games against ACC opponents. On Tuesday, Wofford will face N.C. State at 7:00 pm and on Wednesday the Terriers will play at Duke. Next weekend Wofford will host Furman for a three-game series.
