BOONE, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 13-9 by Appalachian State on Friday evening at Smith Stadium. The Terriers had a 7-5 lead in the fifth, but the Mountaineers used five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.
Wofford is 17-20 on the season and 7-11 in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State is 24-17 overall and 11-12 in the conference. The Terriers were led by James Foster with three hits and Neil Robinette with three RBIs. The Mountaineers were led by Isaac Harrow with three hits and three RBIs, while Rand Smith had three RBIs as well.
The start of the game was delayed almost two hours due to lightning in the area. Once the game was underway, the Mountaineers scored first with an RBI triple from Isaac Harrow. A sacrifice fly from David Towarnicky added a run for a 2-0 advantage.
The Terriers opened the top of the second with a walk to Konstantine Diamaduros and a fielder’s choice by Kyle Behrendt. A home run to left field by Neil Robinette scored three runs and gave the Terriers a 3-2 lead. In the top of the third, James Foster walked and Michael Gilmartin added a double. A ground out by Diamaduros drove in one run and a single by Mac Doyle scored another and Wofford had a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Jake Williams singled with two out and he stole second. James Foster hit a single up the middle to score Williams for a 6-2 score. The Mountaineers answered in the bottom of the fourth when a double from Jeremy Dowdy scored two runners who had reached on walks to make it a 6-4 game.
Michael Gilmartin led off the fifth with a single and advanced to third on an error by the outfielder. A single to left field by Kyle Behrendt scored Gilmartin and give Wofford a 7-4 lead. Appalachian State’s Isaac Harrow hit his second triple of the game to score one run. With the bases loaded and one out, a double play ended the fifth inning with a 7-5 lead for the Terriers.
Appalachian State loaded the bases without an out in the bottom of the sixth. A single through the middle by Rand Smith scored two runs to tie the game at 7-7. A double to left by Wes Hobson scored another run, while a sacrifice fly from Isaac Harrow added a fourth run. A wild pitch added another run and the Mountaineers had a 10-7 lead at the end of six.
The Terriers opened the seventh with a single from Jake Williams and he was driven in on a triple to right center from James Foster. A single by Konstantine Diamaduros scored Foster to pull within a run at 10-9. Appalachian State had back-to-back doubles from Jerod Faggart and Rand Smith two score two runs and a single from Wes Hobson scored another run for a 13-9 lead at the end of seven.
Wofford left one runner on base in the top of the eighth and Appalachian State left one stranded in the bottom of the eighth. James Foster led off with a single in the top of the ninth and after two wild pitches was at third with one out. However the final two batters struck out to end the game with a 13-9 final score after midnight.
Wofford starter Scott Summers went the first 4.1 innings with three hits allowed, five runs scored (three earned) and five strikeouts. John Cornely (3-1) went an inning with five runs on four hits allowed. J.D. Osborne threw two-thirds of an inning with no hits allowed. Drew Sheridan went an inning with three unearned runs allowed on four hits with two strikeouts. Mason Bradley allowed one hit with a strikeout in the eighth.
For the Mountaineers, starter Matt Andress went four innings with six hits and seven runs allowed with three strikeouts. Will Helms (2-0) threw two innings and allowed one hit. Nick Daniels went a third of an inning with two runs allowed on two hits with one strikeout. Chris Patterson threw 1.2 innings with two strikeouts, while Zach Quate went the ninth and allowed one hit with three strikeouts.
The three-game series with the Mountaineers will continue on Saturday at 4:30 pm and on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
