BOONE, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team lost 5-0 to Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon at Smith Stadium. The Mountaineers scored three runs in the first inning and allowed the Terriers only three hits in the game.
Wofford is 17-21 on the season and 7-12 in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State is 25-17 overall and 12-12 in the conference. The Terriers only hits were by Michael Gilmartin, Neil Robinette and David Roney. The Mountaineers had two hits each from Rand Smith and Isaac Harrow, with Harrow adding two RBIs.
The Mountaineers led off with a double from Rand Smith. An RBI single from Isaac Harrow scored Smith. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Chris Alessandria hit into a double play, but a run scored. Wofford caught Nick DeRose stealing, however a run scored before the third out was made and Appalachian State had a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Wofford left two runners on base. Appalachian State added a run in the bottom of the third when Isaac Harrow hit a ground rule double to score Wes Hobson for a 4-0 lead.
The fourth and fifth innings went quietly with neither team having a hit. In the bottom of the sixth, the Mountaineers left one runner on base. Wofford’s Michael Gilmartin hit a ball back at pitcher Josh Dowdy to lead off the seventh. Dowdy was hit in the chest and had to leave the game. Kyle Behrendt reached on an error, but the Terries left both runners on base.
Appalachian State loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the seventh on a double by Rand Smith, an intentional walk and a hit by pitch. A walk to Chris Alessandria allowed one run to score, but the other three runners were stranded as the Mountaineers had a 5-0 lead.
The Terriers had two runners on with two out in the top of the eighth, but both were left on base. The Mountaineers left one on base in the bottom of the eighth. Wofford went down one-two-three in the ninth to end the game.
Wofford starter Bobby DeLuria went the first four innings and allowed only three hits and four runs. Anthony Rowland threw 2.2 innings and allowed one run on one hit. Bobby Streisel faced one batter in the seventh and recorded an out. Drew Sheridan did not allow a hit and had one strikeout in the eighth.
For the Mountaineers, starter Josh Dowdy threw six innings and allowed only two hits with five strikeouts before leaving the game due to injury. Chris Patterson went two innings with two hits allowed and two strikeouts. Zach Quate had one strikeout in the ninth without a hit.
The three-game series with the Mountaineers will conclude on Sunday at noon. Please note this game time has been changed. Wofford will have four days off before the next three-game Southern Conference series begins on Friday night at Elon.
