BOONE, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 11-6 by Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon at Smith Stadium. The Mountaineers used five runs in the second inning to build an insurmountable lead and swept the weekend series.
Wofford is 17-22 on the season and 7-13 in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State is 26-17 overall and 13-12 in the conference. The Terriers had two hits each by Jake Williams and Landon Bennett. The Mountaineers had four hits and two RBIs from Wes Hobson.
The Terriers opened the game with a walk to James Foster and a single by Kyle Behrendt. A sac bunt by Michael Gilmartin moved the runners and a ground-out by Konstantine Diamaduros scored Foster to take a 1-0 lead. The Mountaineers answered in the bottom of the first with a triple by Wes Hobson, who was then brought home by a sacrifice fly from Isaac Harrow to tie the game.
Appalachian State added a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from Jeremy Dowdy. The bases were loaded with one out when a walk and a wild pitch added two more runs. A double down the left line by Isaac Harrow drove in two runs to give the Mountaineers a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jerod Faggart led off for the Mountaineers with a home run to left field for a 7-1 advantage. Wofford added a run in the top of the fifth when Landon Bennett led off with a double. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Mac Doyle to make it 7-2.
The Mountaineers added a run in the bottom of the fifth when Chris Alessandria hit a double and was driven in on a single by Jeremy Dowdy. In the sixth, David Towarnicky added a sacrifice fly to bring in Wes Hobson for a 9-2 score.
Wofford started the seventh with a single from Konstantine Diamaduros and a single from Jake Williams, plus an error to advance the runners. A sacrifice fly from Neil Robinette scored Diamaduros to cut the lead to 9-3.
In the top of the eighth, James Foster and Kyle Behrendt walked. A single to right field by Michael Gilmartin drove in one run. Jake Williams added an RBI single and another single by Landon Bennett added a third run to make it a 9-6 game.
Appalachian State added a run on an RBI single from Wes Hobson in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded, a sacrifice fly by Chris Alessandria added another run for an 11-6 lead heading into the ninth. Wofford had one base runner in the ninth, but was stranded.
Wofford starter Gus White (2-4) went 3.1 innings with seven hits and seven runs allowed with two strikeouts. J.D. Osborne threw one pitch and the defense turned a double play to end the fourth inning. John Cornely threw three innings and allowed five hits and two runs with two strikeouts. Bobby Streisel entered in the eighth and gave up two hits and two runs. Michael Gilmartin moved to the mound and had one strikeout as he recorded the final three outs.
For the Mountaineers, starter Aubrey Edens (5-2) went eight innings with seven hits and six runs allowed with seven strikeouts. Nick Daniels pitched the ninth with two strikeouts and no hits allowed.
Wofford will have four days off before the next three-game Southern Conference series begins on Friday night at Elon at 7:00 pm.
