Baseball Falls 13-3 At The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 13-3 by The Citadel on Friday evening at Joseph P. Riley Park. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the first inning, five in the seventh and three in the eighth as they outhit the Terriers thirteen to six.

Wofford is 12-12 on the season and 3-6 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 16-10 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Konstantine Diamaduros with two hits. The Bulldogs were led by Chris McGuiness with two home runs in three hits and six RBIs.

The Terriers opened the scoring in the top of the first when Alex Lee reached on a hit by pitch and eventually scored on a single by Konstantine Diamaduros to take a 1-0 lead. The Citadel had a double from Bryan Altman and Sonny Meade had an RBI single to tie the game. A three-run homer by Chris McGuiness made it a 4-1 game at the end of the first.

Both teams were retired in order in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Chris McGuiness was walked and after a wild pitch and error, was at third when a sacrifice fly by David Greene drove him in for a 5-1 lead.

In the seventh, The Citadel led off with a single from Sid Fallaw and Brian Shubsda moved to second on a sacrifice bunt as the pinch runner. Nick Orvin singled and Bryan Altman had a fielder’s choice with the runner tagged out at home. A wild pitch scored Orvin for a 6-1 lead with two outs. Richard Jones added a single to drive in another run before Chris McGuiness hit his second home run of the game to score three runs and take a 10-1 lead at the end of seven innings.

The Citadel loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with two hits and an error with two outs. Sonny Meade then hit a double to the left corner to score all three runners and take a 13-3 lead.

Neil Robinette added a solo home run to centerfield with two out in the top of the ninth, which was followed by a home run by Michael Gilmartin over the scoreboard in left center. Konstantine Diamaduros added a base hit, but the Terriers were defeated 13-6.

Terrier starter Scott Summers (3-2) went 6.2 innings with eight hits allowed and five strikeouts. Cash Collins faced two batters and allowed two hits and two runs. Anthony Rowland got the final out in the seventh inning. Mason Bradley threw the eighth and allowed three hits, three runs (all unearned) and a strikeout.

For The Citadel, starter Wes Wrenn (4-1) pitched the complete game with six hits and three runs allowed with eight strikeouts.

Wofford and The Citadel will play on Saturday at 2:00 pm and Sunday at 1:00 pm to complete the three-game Southern Conference series in Charleston.
