Baseball Defeated 6-4 At The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 6-4 by The Citadel on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley Park. The Terriers had a 4-3 lead at the end of four innings, but the Bulldogs scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth for the win.

Wofford is 12-13 on the season and 3-7 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 17-10 overall and 7-4 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Kyle Behrendt with three hits. The Bulldogs were led by Bryan Altman with four hits and Nick Orvin with three hits. Overall, the Bulldogs outhit the Terriers fourteen to six.

The Citadel opened the game with a ground-out RBI by Sonny Meade to take a 1-0 lead at the end of the first. Back-to-back singles in the bottom of the second by Nick Orvin and Bryan Altman drove in two more runs for a 3-0 advantage.

Wofford opened the top of the third with a walk by Neil Robinette. David Roney ripped a triple to the left corner to score Robinette. A ground-out by James Foster scored Roney to make it a 3-2 game.

In the top of the fourth, the Terriers loaded the bases on two walks and a single by Kyle Behrendt. David Roney walked, bringing home Jake Williams to tie the game. James Foster hit an infield single to score another run and give Wofford a 4-3 lead, but the Terriers left three runners on base.

The Bulldogs had three hits in the bottom of the fourth, but two runners were stranded without a run scored. In the bottom of the fifth, Chris McGuiness tied the game at 4-4 with a solo home run to right field. A double to left by Sid Fallaw scored another run to regain the lead at 5-4 at the end of the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, a double of the right center wall by Richard Jones scored Sonny Meade from first base to extend the lead to 6-4. Neither team was able to plate a run in the seventh or eighth innings. In the top of the ninth, the Terriers were retired in order and the final was 6-4.

Terrier starter Gus White (2-3) went the first five innings and allowed ten hits and five hits with two strikeouts. John Cornely threw three innings with four hits and one run allowed with a strikeout.

For The Citadel, starter Asher Wojciechowski (2-1) threw seven innings with five hits and four runs allowed and five strikeouts. Drew Mahaffey recorded the save with one hit allowed with four strikeouts.

Wofford and The Citadel will play on Sunday at 1:00 pm to complete the three-game Southern Conference series in Charleston. The Bulldogs lead the series 2-0 going into the final game.
