Baseball Wins 5-4 At The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team won 5-4 over The Citadel on a Sunday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley Park in the final game of the three-game series. The Terriers scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead and Michael Gilmartin pitched two scoreless innings for the save.

Wofford is 13-13 on the season and 4-7 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 17-11 overall and 7-5 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Michael Gilmartin with three hits and the save, while Josh McKinney added a hit and two RBIs. The Bulldogs were led by David Greene and Matt Simonelli, each with two hits.

The Citadel loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the second. A sacrifice fly from Sid Fallaw scored one run and another sacrifice fly from Kyle Jordan made it a 2-0 game. Wofford had hits in the top of the third from Mike McDonnell and James Foster, and Josh McKinney walked to load the bases with two outs, but all three runners were stranded.

In the top of the fifth, Jake Williams singled and after a sac bunt from James Foster and a stolen base was at third. A single up the middle from Josh McKinney scored Williams for a 2-1 score, but the Terriers left two runners on base in the inning.

The Terriers opened the sixth with a double from Mac Doyle and an infield single from Kyle Behrendt. Mike McDonnell hit into a double play, but scored Doyle from third to tie the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, David Greene singled and a triple by Matt Simonelli to the left corner scored the run to retake the lead at 3-2. A wild pitch on a called strikeout scored Simonelli for a 4-2 score.

Heading to the top of the seventh, James Foster hit a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. He moved to third on a fly out. Josh McKinney reached first on an error that scored Foster. Michael Gilmartin added a single and a single up the middle from Konstantine Diamaduros scored McKinney to tie the game at 4-4. With the bases loaded after a single from Mac Doyle, Kyle Behrendt hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Gilmartin and take the lead at 5-4.

The Citadel left two men on base in the bottom of the seventh. In the top of the eighth, Mike McDonnell reached on an error and Bo Brandt moved to third on a sac bunt and a ground out as the pinch runner, but was left on base. The Bulldogs went quietly in the bottom of the eighth, with the Terriers turning a double play.

Wofford had Michael Gilmartin reach first in the top of the ninth, but was left on base. The Bulldogs went down one-two-three in the bottom of the ninth on three ground balls.

Terrier starter Bobby DeLuria threw the first five innings and allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. J.D. Osborne pitched two-thirds of an inning with two hits and two runs allowed. John Cornely (1-0) went a third of an inning with one hit and a strikeout. Bobby Streisel threw the seventh and allowed two hits without a run. Michael Gilmartin moved to the mound for the last two innings and allowed only one hit with a strikeout.

For The Citadel, starter Matt Crim (2-3) went 6.1 innings with ten hits and five runs allowed to go with five strikeouts. Raymond Copenhaver threw two innings and allowed two hits without a run. Drew Mahaffey struck out both batters faced in the ninth.

The Citadel won the three game series 2-1. Michael Gilmartin recorded his sixth save of the season, giving him 18 for his career and adding to his school record. John Cornely won his first career game, going just a third of an inning.

Wofford will play an exhibition game on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm against the Greenville Drive at Fluor Field in Greenville. Both teams will play with wooden bats in the seven-inning contest. On Thursday, the Terriers will begin a three-game series at Russell C. King Field against UNC Greensboro.
