Baseball Falls 10-6 To UNCG

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 10-6 by UNC Greensboro on Thursday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers struck out thirteen times in the game and left eleven base runners while the Spartans scored ten runs in the first four innings.

Wofford is 13-14 on the season and 4-8 in the Southern Conference. UNC Greensboro is now 10-17 and 1-10 in the conference. The Terriers were led by James Foster with three hits and Michael Gilmartin with two hits and four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the fourth. The Spartans were led by Trevor Edwards with three hits and three RBIs.

The Spartans took the lead in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly from Ed Jayjack to score Michael Wall. In the top of the second, Trevor Edward doubled and Brent O’Berry was hit by a pitch. Michael Wall then hit a three-run homer to right field to take a 4-0 lead. Pedro Leon added an RBI double to score Corey Overholtzer for a 5-0 advantage.

Wofford opened the bottom of the second with a double from Kyle Behrendt and he moved to third on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly from Mike McDonnell scored Behrendt. A single from Josh McKinney added another run, while an RBI double to left field from Michael Gilmartin made it a 5-3 game after two innings.

In the top of the third, the Spartans added to the lead with a two-run homer by Trevor Edwards and a two-run homer from Kris Richards for a 9-3 lead. UNC Greensboro added a run on a double from Trevor Edwards in the top of the fourth for a 10-3 advantage.

The Terriers had singles from James Foster and Josh McKinney to lead off in the bottom of the fourth. Michael Gilmartin then hit a three-run shot to right center to make it a 10-6 game. Three walks loaded the bases for Wofford, however all three runners were stranded at the end of the fourth.

In the final five innings, UNCG had only two hits and left three runners on base. Wofford on the other hand was held without a hit by Spartan pitcher Rob Gilliam and the score remained 10-6 for the final.

For the Terriers, starter Scott Summers (3-3) allowed nine runs on six hits in 2.1 innings with a strikeout. Anthony Rowland threw 3.2 innings with one run and three hits allowed with on strikeout, while J.D. Osborne threw two innings with two strikeouts and no hits. Bobby Streisel pitched the ninth and allowed one hit with a strikeout.

UNC Greensboro starter Greg Martin went three innings with ten hits and six runs allowed with four strikeouts. Zach Furl threw two-thirds of an inning without a hit and one strikeout. Rob Gilliam (2-3) went the final 5.1 innings without allowing a hit and striking out eight.

The Terriers and Spartans will play the second game of the three-game series at Russell C. King Field at Switzer Stadium on Friday at 7:00 pm, with the final game scheduled for Saturday at 3:00 pm.
