STATESBORO, Ga. – The Wofford College baseball team ended the season with a 9-5 loss to Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon by Georgia Southern at Clements Stadium. The Terriers scored four runs in the first inning, but the Eagles then scored the next nine runs on the way to the victory.
Wofford is 17-32 on the season and 7-22 in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern is 38-15 overall and 20-8 in the conference to secure second place. The Terriers were led by Kyle Behrendt with three hits and Michael Gilmartin with a home run and three RBI. Griffin Benedict led the Eagles with three hits and two RBI, while A.J. Wirnsberger added two hits and three RBI.
The Terriers opened the game with a single from James Foster and Kyle Behrendt reaching on a hit by pitch. Michael Gilmartin then blasted a ball over the center field fence to score three runs. Jake Williams added a single and another single from Mac Doyle drove in a run to take a 4-0 lead.
Georgia Southern got one run back in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Griffin Benedict. Wofford added two more hits in the second and one in the third, but did not score. In the bottom of the third, Eric Phillips hit a two-run homer to make it a one-run game. Kyle Blackburn reached first on an error to score another run and tie the game at 4-4.
With two out in the bottom of the fourth, the Eagles strung a base hit, hit by pitch and two more singles, which added two runs to give Georgia Southern a 6-4 lead. A.J. Wirnsberger hit a solo home run to open the bottom of the fifth, increasing the lead to 7-4. Another run was plated by the Eagles in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from A.J. Wirnsberger for an 8-4 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles added another run on a fielder’s choice by A.J. Wirnsberger to make it a 9-4 game. Wofford loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth on two walks and a single by Landon Bennett. A single from Kyle Behrendt drove in one run to make it 9-5. Michael Gilmartin came to the plate representing the tying run, but he grounded out to first to end the game.
Wofford starter Anthony Rowland went three innings and allowed three hits and four runs (two earned) and had two strikeouts. Drew Sheridan worked an inning and allowed two runs on three hits. Bobby Streisel and J.D. Osborne both allowed one run and one hit in an inning each. Cash Collins allowed one hit and had one strikeout in the seventh inning. Michael Gilmartin pitched the eighth and allowed one run on two hits.
Georgia Southern starter Matt Murray threw seven innings and gave up seven hits and four runs with seven strikeouts. Dexter Bobo went an inning with one hit allowed and Kyle Kamppi pitched the ninth allowing two hits and one run with one strikeout.
The contest was the final game of the 2009 season for the Terriers.
