Baseball Falls 21-2 At Elon

ELON, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 21-2 by Elon on Saturday night at Latham Stadium. One night after the longest game in Southern Conference history, the Phoenix used a twelve-run sixth inning to break open the contest.

Wofford is 17-24 on the season and 7-15 in the Southern Conference. Elon is 32-13 overall and are first in the conference with a 19-4 record. The Terriers were led by Neil Robinette with three hits and an RBI, while Michael Gilmartin had two hits, including a home run. Elon was led by Harry Austin with three hits and four RBIs.

The Terriers left two players on in the first inning and one in the second. In the bottom of the second, Pat Irvine singled and Bennett Davis reached on an error, after a fielder’s choice by Justin Hilt, Dallas Tarleton doubled to score one run. Elon left the bases loaded at the end of two, but had a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, the first three Elon batters walked to load the bases. A sacrifice fly from Bennett Davis scored one run. With two on base, Mike Melillo hit a home run to right to make it a 5-0 game.

Wofford got on the board in the top of the fourth. Jake Williams led off with a single and moved to third after a double from Josh McKinney. A sacrifice fly from Neil Robinette scored Williams for a 5-1 score. The Terriers added another run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Michael Gilmartin to left center.

Elon added four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-2 lead. Pat Irvine was hit by a pitch and a home run to left by Bennett Davis scored two runs. Mike Melillo walked and Harry Austin singled. Dallas Tarleton grounded out to score one run and a double from Ryan Adams scored the final run of the inning.

The Phoenix put the game out of reach with twelve runs in the bottom of the sixth. A double from Harry Austin scored two runs, a double by Ryan Adams scored two runs and a single from Cory Harrilchak added a run. With the bases loaded, a double by Chase Austin cleared the bases for a 17-2 lead. Matt Kirchner had an RBI single and a single from Harry Austin added two more runs. Neal Pritchard reached on a fielder’s choice that scored the twelfth run of the inning to take a 21-2 lead.

Neither team scored in the seventh or eighth innings. Wofford had two base runners in the top of the ninth with a single from Neil Robinette and David Roney reaching on a hit by pitch,

Wofford starter Bobby DeLuria (1-5) threw the first three innings and allowed five runs on three hits with one strikeout. Anthony Rowland went two innings with four runs scored on three hits with two strikeouts. Mason Bradley allowed five runs on one hit with a strikeout. Cash Collins allowed seven runs on six hits. Reid McElveen went 2.2 innings and did not allow a hit with a career-best five strikeouts.

For the Phoenix, starter Daniel Britt (6-0) went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts. J.D. Reichenbach threw two innings without a hit and two strikeouts. Daniel LoCastro pitched the ninth and had one strikeout and allowed one hit.

Wofford and Elon will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Next week the Terriers will visit USC Upstate on Tuesday and host South Carolina on Wednesday before a home series with the College of Charleston.
