Baseball Drops Game Two To College of Charleston

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 24-7 by the College of Charleston on Saturday evening at Russell C. King Field. The Cougars scored thirteen runs in the final three innings to put the game out of reach.

Wofford is 17-28 on the season and 7-18 in the Southern Conference. The College of Charleston is 34-16 overall and 16-10 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Michael Gilmartin with two hits, both home runs. Jake Williams had three RBIs on the day. The Cougars had 27 hits on the day, led by Joey Bergman with five. The teams combined to hit eight home runs on a windy afternoon.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the first inning with a double and a home run by Joey Bergman. Ryan Daniels added an RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Wofford was able to answer with a lead-off home run by James Foster, the first of his career. Josh McKinney followed with a single and a home run to center field by Michael Gilmartin tied the game at 3-3.

In the top of the second, the Cougars added a run and in the top of the third home runs by Ryan Daniels and Cole Rakar gave the College of Charleston a 6-3 lead. The Terriers got one run back in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Michael Gilmartin.

Neither team scored in the fourth, the only scoreless inning of the game. In the top of the fifth, a single from Clay McCord scored a run for the Cougars. The College of Charleston broke the game open in the sixth with four runs on three hits – two singles and double – to take an 11-4 lead. The Cougars added three runs in the top of the seventh, including a two-run homer from Mike Hentz for a 14-4 lead.

The Terriers rallied in the bottom of the seventh and got three runs back. With Michael Gilmartin and Konstantine Diamaduros on base, Jake Williams hit a blast to left center to make it a 14-7 game. A fielder’s choice and two walks loaded the bases with two out, but all three runners were left on base.

The College of Charleston put the game out of reach with three more runs in the top of the eighth, including a two-RBI double by Ryan Daniels. In the top of the ninth, the Cougars added seven more runs in seven hits for the final 24-7 score.

Wofford starter Gus White (2-6) threw 2.2 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. Bobby Streisel went two innings with one hit and one run allowed and four strikeouts. The Terriers went deep into the bullpen, as six pitchers combined for the final 4.1 innings and allowed 17 runs with three strikeouts.

The College of Charleston starter Kevin Decker (3-0) went six innings with nine hits and four runs allowed with seven strikeouts. Aaron Bouronich threw two-thirds of an inning with three runs allowed on three hits. Tom Schiller went 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and Owen Brittle went the ninth with two strikeouts.

Wofford will complete the three-game series on Sunday at 1:00 pm. It will mark the final home game of the season and the Terriers will honor seniors Scott Summers and Reid McElveen prior to the game.
