Wofford Announces 2009 Hall of Fame Class

SPARTANBURG, SC –Former Wofford College student-athletes Heidi Best ’01, Jimmy Miner ’04, Matt Nelson ’04 and Wendy Rohr ‘04 have been selected by the Hall of Fame Committee of the Wofford College Terrier Club Board of Directors as the 2009 inductees into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

In addition, the Hall of Fame will honor Eli Sanders as the Distinguished Service Award winner and Lucy Quinn as an Honorary Letterman.

The Hall of Fame will induct its newest class on October 17 when the Terriers host Appalachian State in football.

The Hall of Fame recognizes “those former athletes and coaches who, by outstanding athletic achievements and service, have made lasting and significant contributions to the cause of sports at Wofford College, the Spartanburg community, South Carolina and the nation.”

Best was a two-time All-SoCon honoree in women’s soccer and Rohr earned All-SoCon honors three times for the women’s tennis team. Nelson was the 2003 SoCon Football Defensive Player of the Year and Miner was named All-SoCon four times at punter.

Heidi Best ‘01
Best earned All-Southern Conference honors in 1997 and 1998. She is one of only two Terriers in program history to earn All-SoCon accolades more than once. For her career, she scored 18 goals and added 14 assists for 50 career points. On the all-time career lists, she is first in goals scored, sixth in assists, fifth in points and fourth in shots. In 1997, she scored ten goals, becoming one of only five players in school history with ten or more goals in a season. She also holds the school record for shots in a game with thirteen in 1997 against College of Charleston. The native of Columbia, South Carolina, graduated in 2001.

Jimmy Miner ‘04
A four-time All-Southern Conference punter, Jimmy Miner earned honorable mention All-America honors in 2002. He led the Terriers in punting in all four seasons and is the all-time leader inn punting average at 40.9 yards per punt. As a senior in 2003, he was second in the conference and seventh nationally in net punting with a 38.2 average. During his junior season he was twelfth nationally with a 42.2 average and had twelve punts of 50 or more yards. In 2001, he was named first team All-Southern Conference, leading the league with a 42.0 average that was also eighth nationally. A native of Kennesaw, Georgia, he went to training camp in 2004 with the St. Louis Rams.

Matt Nelson ‘04
Matt Nelson was named Southern Conference Male Athlete of the Year for 2003-04, the only Wofford athlete to earn the honor. During his senior season, he had a team-high 167 tackles and three interceptions on the way to being named first-team All-American by the Associated Press and Sports Network. Nelson finished third in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the top defensive player in Division I-AA and was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He earned Wofford Most Valuable Player honors three times and holds school records in tackles (452) and solo tackles (296) with nine interceptions to rank tenth all-time. Nelson, a native of Grove City, Ohio, graduated in 2004.

Wendy Rohr ‘04

A three-time All-Southern Conference honoree, Wendi Rohr played number one singles all four years at Wofford. As a senior, she earned All-SoCon honors at singles and doubles. She was ranked as high as #25 in the Southeast Regional rankings by ITA, the first women’s player to be regionally ranked at the NCAA Division I level. At number one singles, she had a record of 15-2 overall and 9-1 in the conference. During her junior season she posted a 7-2 SoCon mark and earned all-conference honors at singles and doubles. Named All-Southern Conference as a sophomore with a 16-4 overall mark. A native of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Rohr graduated in 2004.

Lucy Quinn ‘83, Honorary Letterman
Lucy Quinn has been a member of the Wofford community since 1963, dating to her initial employment as an assistant in the registrar’s office. She earned a B.A. in English at Wofford, which she completed in 1983 and continued her education at the University of South Carolina, earning a master’s degree in higher education administration. In August 1987, Quinn was promoted to registrar, reporting directly to the dean of the college, a position she held until November 2008. Her duties involved managing and safeguarding student records, setting up class schedules and conducting registration, and directing the summer school and commencement exercises. Even more important was the personal relationship she had with hundreds of Wofford students and student-athletes, advising and encouraging them. No one individual has had greater impact on Wofford retention and graduation rates.

Eli Sanders ‘54, Distinguished Service Award
Eli Sanders attended Wofford on a football scholarship and graduated in 1954. He was inducted into the Wofford Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991. Sanders and his brother founded Sanders Brothers Construction Company in the early 1960s on the principles of hard work, customer satisfaction, quality products and service. He credits his success in business to his educational experiences at Wofford – both in the classroom and on the playing field. In addition to his consistent and generous annual financial support of scholarships for student-athletes, he has served several terms on the Terrier Club Board of Directors. He and his wife, Helen Gregory Sanders, have two sons, Greg and Ell, who recently established a scholarship fund in Eli’s honor.
