SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford Women’s Soccer was defeated by High Point 1-0 at Snyder Field Friday night. The Terrier’s had several strong chances in the game however Panther’s Laura Shupe had the one goal to take the game.
In the first half, the first fifteen minutes of play was primarily in the midfield. High Point had the first four shots on goal, all of which were wide of the net. The Terriers had their first chance of the night at 32:05 when Rachel Blackburn took a shot from 15 yard out that was saved. Wofford added a second shot with just under two minutes to play in the half on a shot by Anne Phillips.
Wofford controlled play early in the second half, with two shots by Maggie McLaughlin. With 22:25 left in the second half, Sydney Reed took a shot from the left side of the box that went just wide of the right post. Two minutes later, the Panthers got on the scoreboard when Laura Shupe took a shot from the top of the box that went into the top left corner of the net. Danielle Eldridge had the assist at the 69:48 mark.
With 3:40 left in the game, Wofford’s Jewel Kawamoto played a free kick into the box, but the Terriers were unable to get a shot on goal. The Panthers were able to hold on in the final minutes for the 1-0 win, their first of the season.
For Wofford, goalie Erika Christensen made four saves with one goal against, while Marisa Abbott made two saves for the shutout win. High Point was whistled for six fouls to Wofford’s five, and High Point had a three to one edge on corner kicks.
The Terriers return Sunday for a Men’s and Women’s Soccer double header starting at 1:30 against Winthrop and 4 against Mercer.
