Box Score Wofford vs. Georgia Southern Box Score
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team fell in four sets to Georgia Southern in the Southern Conference opener for both teams.
The first set saw 12 ties and five lead changes as the teams battled defensively. Although the Eagles took an 8-5 lead early in the set, the Terriers fought back to take a 12-10 advantage. A Georgia Southern push gave the Eagles a 19-16 advantage, forcing a Wofford time out. After the break, the Terriers responded to tie the score at 22, but a Georgia Southern kill and service ace, combined with a Wofford miscue, would give the Eagles the 25-22 win.
Georgia Southern came out strong in the second set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before a kill from Joanna Suddath put the Terriers on the board. Wofford managed to claw its way back to within two points at 7-9, but would never regain the lead as the Eagles took the second set 25-17.
Wofford took a quick lead of its own in the third set, but a Georgia Southern push mid-set tied the score at 13 then gave the Eagles a two-point lead at 15-13. Wofford tied the score at 18 and pushed for a 22-19 lead, led by strong serving from Caitlyn Horton, who recorded three service aces in six serves to help the Terriers to a 25-23 win.
The Eagles jumped to an early lead and never looked back in the fourth set, rallying behind four straight kills from sophomore Parker Small mid-set to take a 25-16 lead.
Sophomore Bethany Sanford led the Eagles with 16 kills, while Small added 15 for the Eagles. Sanford recorded a double-double with 17 digs, while libero Cristin Haines notched a match-high 22 defensive saves.
Wofford was led by junior Stacy Byrd’s 12 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double. Setter Joanna Suddath tallied 34 assists and libero Sarah Palmer led the team with 18 digs.
With the loss, Wofford falls to 13-3 on the season and 0-1 in the Southern Conference while Georgia Southern improves to 10-5 overall and 1-0 in the SoCon. The Terriers will take the court again Saturday as they host Davidson in a 2:00 matchup.
