Men’s Soccer Wins 4-1 Over Lipscomb

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford College men’s soccer team picked up a 4-1 win on Sunday afternoon against Lipscomb at Synder Field. The Terriers scored four goals in the second half, including two by Kentrel Owens, in the victory.

Wofford moves to 4-0-2 on the season, while the Bison are 3-5-1. The Terriers had a 13 to seven lead on shots. Terrier goals were scored by Andrew Eppelsheimer, Mac Gambill and two by Kentrel Owens.

The Bisons had control of the ball for the first seven minutes of play and had the first shot at 10:06 when Andrew Chamberlain got his foot on a cross but the attempt was wide. The Terriers’ first shot of the game came at 12:58 when Branson Hyatt took a free kick from 30 yards that went high and wide left.

With nine minutes left in the first half, Branson Hyatt added a shot from 25 yards out that was also wide left. The best chance of the half for Wofford came with just 25 second left when Eddie Nam took a shot from fifteen yards out that was saved by Brent McGee.

In the second half, Wofford took the lead at 49:39 when Andrew Eppelsheimer took a shot from 15 yards out that found the back of the net. Branson Hyatt had the assist as the Terriers took a 1-0 lead. The Bison responded at 51:44 when Andrew Chamberlain cross the ball back in front of the net and found Andre Santos on the left post who put the ball into the corner to tie the game.

At 62:15, the Terriers regained the lead when Paulo Bonfim fed a ball to Kentrel Owens up top. Owens took the ball in to 15 yards and put the ball past the keeper. Four minutes later, Armin Kinigadner was the one to chip the ball up to Owens, who this time took the ball to ten yards and took the shot to the right of the goalie. Lipscomb had a chance to tie at 76:45 when Chase Nieri had a shot that was saved by Thomas Hunter.

Wofford added a fourth goal at 81:27 when Mac Gambill gained possession of the ball in the box. He turned and made a couple moved before putting the ball past the goalie to go up 4-1. Lipscomb had several chances late, but they were wide or high.

For the Terriers, goalie Thomas Hunter made one save and had one goal against. Brent McGee had four saves and four goals against for Lipscomb. The Terriers had eight corner kicks, while Lipscomb had three. Lipscomb was called for 15 fouls to Wofford’s eleven and no cards were issued in the game.

Wofford has won four straight games, their longest winning streak since putting together eleven wins in a row in the 1994 season. The four goals in a game were the most since defeated Lipscomb 4-1 in 2007. Wofford is the lone undefeated team in the Southern Conference. The goal by Mac Gambill was the first of his career and Kentrel Owens had his first multi-goal game.

The Terriers will begin Southern Conference play on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Appalachian State.
