Wofford vs. Chattanooga Box Score
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s basketball team posted a strong first half and a second-half comeback, but could not hang on to defeat the Chattanooga Mocs, currently ranked first in the Southern Conference, falling 78-72 in Benjamin Johnson Arena on Monday.
The teams traded three-pointers to open the contest, and a 6-0 run gave the Terriers and early 9-3 lead, but the Mocs responded to take a one-point lead at 12-11 off a three pointer from Michelle Davis. A layup and free throw shot from Mahagony Williams gave the advantage back to Wofford, but Chattanooga quickly tied the score at 14 and went on an eight-point run to bring the score to 22-14.
A pair of free throws from Williams keyed the Wofford run that would bring the score within one point at 23-24 with 5:34 remaining in the first half. Two Chattanooga made free throws gave the Mocs a three-point lead, but a jumper from April Moorhouse and two made free throws from Maddie Helms put the Terriers up by one with 2:17 remaining. Wofford pushed its lead to as many as five points, but a brief run by the Mocs to close the second half kept the score within one point, with Wofford leading 32-31 at halftime.
The two teams battled to begin the second half, reaching tied scores five times in the first seven minutes of play. At the 12:41 mark, with the score tied at 43, Chattanooga went on a 15-4 run to take the largest lead of the game at 58-47 with 8:51 remaining, forcing a Wofford timeout.
After the break, the Terriers turned to senior Kristin Bradley, who knocked down three three-pointers in less than two minutes to help Wofford bring the score within two points at 58-60. Chattanooga responded with two three-pointers to bring their lead back to eight points with 5:20 left. Despite stepping up defensively and forcing three turnovers in the last five minutes, the Terriers were unable to overcome the Chattanooga lead, falling 78-72.
Jenaya Wade-Fray led four Mocs in double-digit scoring with 19 points, while Michelle Davis added 16. Freshman Kayla Christopher contributed 15 points and six rebounds and Shanara Hollinquest added 11 points and six rebounds in the win.
Junior Mahagony Williams paced Wofford with 17 points, while senior Kristin Bradley recorded a career-high 15 points on 5 of 6 shooting from beyond the arc. Freshman Rachel Brittenham contributed nine points and senior Natalie Gramblin added eight points and led the team with six assists. Sophomore April Moorhouse led the team with nine rebounds, including six offensive boards. The team recorded a season-high nine three-pointers and 94.4% free throw percentage.
With the win, Chattanooga improves to 15-6 on the season and 10-2 in Southern Conference play while Wofford falls to 3-15 overall and 2-9 in league play. The Terriers will take a break from Southern Conference opponents as they host Southern Virginia on Wednesday, January 27. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m. in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
