SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a cold and snowy day, the Wofford men’s basketball team survived a cold-shooting game and defeated Furman 57-46 on Saturday afternoon at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Terriers shot 35.9% for the game and only 18.8% from three, but were aided by twenty Paladin turnovers.
Wofford is 15-8 on the season and 7-3 in the SoCon, while Furman is 10-11 overall and 4-6 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Noah Dahlman with 12 points and Tim Johnson with ten points and nine rebounds. Furman was led by Jordan Miller with eleven points and nine rebounds and Amu Saaka with ten rebounds and eight points.
“We had to play good defense tonight,” said head coach Mike Young. “They have bought into the fact that if we guard well and physically, it is irrelevant what happens from there. We did a great job on Saaka who is a legitimate first team all-conference player. Holding him to eight points was a pretty significant statistic for us. I thought Kevin Giltner was our player of the game. His energy and he got a couple of shots down to get a little air under our wing and propelled us to better defense.”
The Terriers scored first, but the score went back and fourth for the first twelve minutes and the game was tied at 16 all. After a two minute scoring drought, Furman took an 18-16 lead and had a 20-19 lead with 4:40 left in the first half after a bucket by Tim Johnson. The Paladins scored the next three points until Jamar Diggs hit a lay-up to make it a 23-21 game with 2:11 on the clock. Furman’s Jordan Miller hit the final shot of the half for a 25-21 Paladin lead. Wofford shot only 27.3% in the first half, including 1-of-10 from three.
Noah Dahlman and Tim Johnson scored to open the second half and tied the game at 25. The score was tied again at 27, 29 and then at 31 with 12:11 on the clock. Wofford used a shot by Terry Martin and back-to-back threes from Kevin Giltner to take a 39-35 lead. Noah Dahlman then added two buckets for a 43-35 lead with 9:58 left in the half.
Tim Johnson kept the Terrier run going with a lay-up at 8:48 for a 45-35 lead. Over the next six minutes, Wofford did not score, but the Paladins were only able to put four points on the board in that time for a 45-39 Terrier lead at 2:36. Wofford then used two free throws from Tim Johnson, a jumper by Cameron Rundles and a lay-up by Noah Dahlman to take a 51-39 lead with just 1:44 remaining. The Terriers were able to hit free throws down the stretch for a 57-46 final score.
Wofford shot 35.9% from the floor and were 18.8% from three. From the free throw line, the Terriers were 53.3%. Furman was 36.0% overall and were 13.3% from behind the arc. They were 57.1% from the line. Wofford was outrebounded 46 to 35, but committed only six turnovers to the Paladins 20.
Noah Dahlman scored in double-figures for the 23rd time this season and has led the team in scoring in 18 games. Wofford has won eight of their last nine games. Junior Salters was held scoreless for the second time this season (0-7).
The Terriers continue the four-game home stretch with Elon visiting Benjamin Johnson Arena at 7:00 pm on Wednesday night.
