Wofford vs. Furman Box Score
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Despite a near-career high 19 points from Mahagony Williams, the Wofford women’s basketball team fell by a score of 72-53 at nearby Furman in its first contest of 2010.
Furman rallied behind 22 points from freshman Raegan Thompson and a team three-point field goal percentage of nearly 50 percent.
The Terriers opened the first half with a two-point basket from Mahagony Williams to take the early 2-0 lead, but it would be Wofford’s only lead of the game, as Furman answered with a three-pointer from Thompson and a second trey from senior Kali Holtfreter to regain a 6-2 lead.
A tied score at six quickly dissipated as the Paladins went on a 12-2 run over five minutes to take a 20-8 advantage with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Terriers were able to cut the Paladin lead to single digits at the 5:21 mark off two made free throws from Kelly Blake, but Furman headed into halftime with its largest lead thus far, holding the 37-21 advantage at the break.
In the opening five minutes of the second half, Furman managed to extend its lead to as many as 24 points, and despite cutting the lead to 15 with eight minutes left, the Terriers were unable to mount an offensive attack, falling 72-53.
Thompson’s 22 points led three Paladins in double-digit scoring, with Kendra Berry adding 14 and Lee Stephens contributing 12. Stephens also led the team in assists with six, while Berry notched a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds. Also notching double-digit boards was freshman Lakyn Ledford, who grabbed 10.
Williams recorded 19 points for the Terriers, one shy of her career-high 20. The junior from Little Rock, Ark. also grabbed a double-double with 11 rebounds and added five blocks. Freshman Domi Gergely contributed eight points in her first collegiate outing, and senior Kelly Dwyer grabbed seven steals for the Terriers.
With the win, Furman improves to 5-11 overall and 3-4 in Southern Conference play while Wofford falls to 1-11 on the season and 0-5 in league play. The Terriers will return home Friday, January 8 to host UNC Greensboro in a 6:00 p.m. matchup in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
