GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Stacy Byrd recorded a team-high 14 kills and a .306 hitting percentage, but the Wofford College Terriers came up short in a 3-2 (25-19, 18-25, 25-12, 23-25, 15-10) Southern Conference road loss to the University of North Carolina Greensboro Saturday night in Fleming Gymnasium.
The Terriers fall to 11-12 overall and 1-5 in the SoCon in the team’s first road conference match of the season. The Spartans improve to 16-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Byrd collected 14 kills on 36 attempts with only three errors in the match to lead all Terriers by six kills. Wendy Burnett and Catelyn Amende tallied eight kills apiece, while Amanda Liguori had seven kills. Bekah Dorsey tallied a double-double with 26 assists and 14 digs. Reagan Styles had a team-high 15 digs.
In the opening set, Greensboro broke an 11-11 tie with an 8-3 run to take a 19-14 lead. Wofford was unable to cut the lead as they fell 25-19. Byrd tallied six of her 14 kills, while Styles notched ten of her 15 digs in the opening frame.
Wofford returned the favor in the second set as they broke a 12-12 tie with a 7-2 run en route to a 25-18 set win. Wofford hit .344 compared to UNCG’s .088 hitting percentage.
In set three, Greensboro took the opening point and never looked back as they went on to post a 25-12 win. Greensboro, which hit .346, took advantage of Wofford’s ten hitting errors and -.086 hitting percentage in the set.
Set three saw Greensboro jump out to a 12-6 lead, but Wofford would rally with their backs against the wall in the match. The Terriers regrouped and tie the set at 15 with a 9-3 run. The two teams went back and forth as the match saw six ties in the waning points. Wofford broke a 21-21 tie with a kill and a service ace by Amende. Two kills by the Spartan’s Kayrn Finney sandwiched around a kill by Burnett gave Wofford a slim 24-23 lead. Liguori finished the set on the next point, 25-23, forcing a decisive set five.
With set five tied at five, Greensboro took control of the set with a 4-1 run with kills from three different players. The Spartans won six of the final ten points as they clinched the match with a 15-10 win.
Greensboro outhit the Spartans .243 to .127 and controlled the net with 12 team blocks compared to Terriers’s four team blocks. UNCG also picked up 14 more digs than Wofford.
The Spartans were led by Ariel Newman, who had 15 kills and a .353 hitting percentage. Finney pitched in with 14 kills and a match-high .480 hitting percentage. She also had ten total blocks, one solo block and nine block assists.
Wofford will return to Ben Johnson Arena Saturday, October 16th with a 6 p.m. match against Western Carolina.
