BLACKSBURG, VA. -- Virginia Tech had six players score in double-digits en route to a 93-53 win over the Wofford College Terriers Sunday afternoon in the Cassell Coliseum.
The Hokies received five ten point efforts from Nia Evans, Shanel Harrison, Aerial Wilson, Alyssa Fenyn and Taylor Ayers. Monet Tellier led the VaTech with 11 points.
Wofford received double digit efforts from three players -- April Moorhouse and Mahagony Williams had 12 points, while Jessica Escorza chipped in 11 points.
Va Tech opened the scoring five seconds into the game with two free throws by Tellier, as they opened up a 19-3 lead six minutes into the contest. The Terriers only basket was a three from Moorhouse during the stretch.
The Hokies extended their lead to 22, 26-4, with 11:48 remaining, but Wofford went on an 11-6 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead to 19, 32-13. Wofford pulled within 18 on back-to-back baskets by Rachel Brittenham and Fanchon Sartor two minutes later.
VaTech responded by taking the margin to its peak in the first half at 26, 44-18, with 1:51 to play on an Aerial Wilson layup, as the Hokies carried a 44-22 lead into the locker rooms at the break.
Wofford shot a 25 percent from the floor converting only seven of their 28 attempts in the half and 20 percent from three making two of their ten shots. Virginia Tech shot 44 percent (17-of-38) overall and 33 percent (2-of-6) from three in the half. They also made all eight of their free throw attempts.
In the second, the Terriers notched only a made free throw by Moorhouse until the 11:18 mark when Williams knocked down a jumper. The Hokies had opened the half with a 16-3 run taking a 62-25 lead following the Williams basket. A minute and a half later, VaTech had their largest lead, 43, of the game on a Kyani White made field goal to make it 68-25.
The Hokies allowed the margin back under 40 a few times before the final buzzer, but finished with a 40 point win, 93-53, over the Terriers.
The Terriers finished the game with a 30 percent field goal percentage (17-of-55) and a 22 percent three-point percentage (4-of-18), while the Hokies shot a sizzling 50 percent from the floor (36-of-71) and 44 percent (4-of-9) from behind the three-point arc. VaTech missed only one free throw in the contest going 17-of-18 from the charity stripe.
Wofford gave up 56 points in the paint compared to their own 26 points, and the Hokies took advantage of 25 Terrier turnovers to score 28 points. Wofford scored 11 points off of 16 Virginia Tech turnovers.
VaTech controlled the boards holding a 44-31, plus 13, rebounding margin in the contest. They had 15 offensive rebounds and scored 25 second chance points. Wofford was only able to score four points off of 12 offensive rebounds.
Williams had the game’s only double-double for the Terriers as she added 11 rebounds to go along with her 12 points. Williams also added a game-high three blocked shots.
For the Hokies all but two players who entered the game scored points. Despite not being on of those players, Nikki Davis dished out six assists, and Fenyn tallied eight assists and five steals.
Wofford has never beaten an ACC team going 0-18 all-time against the conference.
The Terriers will return to the friendly confines of the Ben Johnson Arena Wednesday with tip off schedule for 6 p.m. against Campbell. The Terriers look to snap an 0-5 streak to the Camels.
