Men’s Basketball Falls In Three Overtime Battle

CINCINNATI, Ohio – In three overtimes on Saturday evening, the Wofford College men’s basketball team was defeated 94-90 by Xavier at the Cintas Center. The Terriers appeared to win the game at the end of the first and second overtimes, but the Musketeers scored ten points in the third overtime to claim the win.

Wofford is 2-5 on the season and Xavier is 5-1. The Terriers were led by Noah Dahlman with 33 points along with five assists. Jamar Diggs, Terry Martin and Cameron Rundles also scored in double figures for the Terriers and Tim Johnson led the team with six rebounds. The Musketeers were led by Tu Holloway with 28 points. Mark Lyons had 25 and Jamel McLean and Kenny Frease both had double-doubles.

The Musketeers scored the first seven points of the game and built an eleven point lead at 19-8 with 11:43 left in the first half. Xavier was able to push the lead to twelve on three occasions and was up 32-20 with 2:56 on the clock. The Terriers were able to chip away at the lead and when Kevin Giltner hit a three with two seconds left it was 35-28 at the break.

Brad Loesing opened the second half with a three to make it a 35-31 game. Six minutes into the half, the Musketeers had extended the lead again to eleven points at 44-33. Wofford answered with a 10-0 run that included threes by Kevin Giltner and Cameron Rundles to make it a 44-43 game with 10:56 on the clock. A lay-up by Noah Dahlman with 9:14 remaining in the second half gave Wofford their first lead of the game at 47-46.

With the game tied at 48, Wofford scored the next five points for a 53-48 lead with 6:21 left in the second. A jump shot by Jamar Diggs with 4:23 on the clock gave the Terriers an eight point lead at 58-50. Tu Holloway scored the next six points for Xavier from the free throw line. The game was tied at 60 with 1:01 remaining, but Xavier added two free throws to take a lead with 28 seconds left. Cameron Rundles tied it with eleven seconds left with a jumper to send it to overtime.

In the first overtime, Wofford took a one-point lead at 66-55 after a lay-up by Noah Dahlman. A three by Brad Loesing and another bucket by Dahlman gave the Terriers a 72-68 lead with 40 seconds on the clock. Noah Dahlman made it a 75-72 lead with three seconds left. Dante Jackson hit the first of two free throws and missed the second. The rebound was loose and tipped into the basket with one second on the clock to tie it at 75.

Xavier scored the first four points of the second overtime before a three by Brad Loesing and a lay-up by Noah Dahlman gave the Terriers an 80-79 lead. With the game tied at 83, Tim Johnson hit one free throw and Jamel McLean hit one as well for a tie at 84. Cameron Rundles appeared to hit the game winner at the buzzer, but after review it was ruled after the horn.

Heading to the third overtime, the Musketeers took a 90-84 lead at the 2:56 mark. Wofford tied with again with a bucket by Noah Dahlman, two free throws by Dahlman and a jumper by Drew Crowell for a 90-90 score with 41 seconds left. Xavier added a jumper by Tu Holloway and two free throws by Mark Lyons in the last ten seconds for the 94-90 final score.

Wofford shot 46/6% from the floor and were 33.3% from three. From the free throw line, the Terriers were 80.0%. Xavier was 49.2% overall and were 33.3% from behind the arc. They were 75.0% from the line and had a 40 to 20 advantage in free throws taken. The Musketeers had a 49-29 lead on the boards/ Wofford committed only two turnovers in the final 35 minutes of play.

The game was a homecoming for Brad Loesing and Terry Martin, both natives of Cincinnati. In addition, assistant coach Mark Prosser’s late father was the head coach at Xavier and will be inducted into the school’s hall of fame later this season. It was the third straight overtime game for Wofford this season and the longest game in the team’s NCAA Division I history.

The SoCon schedule begins on Thursday, December 2 when the Terriers host UNC Greensboro at 7:00 pm. Prior to tipoff, Wofford will unveil the 2010 Southern Conference Championship banners.
