Terriers Come Up Short Against Spartans, 80-67

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Freshman Logan Morris recorded a career-high 16 points to lead all scorers for Wofford as the Terriers fell to the UNC Greensboro Spartans 80-67 in Fleming Gym in a Southern Conference women’s basketball contest.

It was the second consecutive game Morris earned a career-high in points.  She notched 12 points against Bluefield College the last time the Terriers took the floor.  Saturday, she was 3-of-6 from the floor, including knocking down both of her three point attempts.  She was an impressive 8-for-8 at the free line to round out her 16 points.  She becomes the 17th Terrier to go 1.000 from the free throw line with a minimum of seven attempts.  It was also the second time Morris led the team in scoring, as she had a team-high 11 points against Norfolk State.

Wofford got on the scoreboard first with a Rachel Brittenham three pointer, but UNCG responded with a 10-0 run to take a 10-3 lead on a three by Kendra Smith with 16 minutes remaining in the half.  Three minutes later a three by Dayshaun Richbow made it 17-5, Spartans.  UNCG went on a 12-2 run to take a 29-9 lead capped off by a Monique Floyd jumper with 6:23 to play to give the Spartans their highest lead of the half.  Wofford would cut the lead to 16, 35-19, on a Maddie Helms three with 1:50 to play, but Amanda Leigh pushed the Spartan lead back to 18 points, 37-19, with a basket for the final points of the half.

Wofford committed 18 turnovers giving UNCG 21 points off turnovers in the half, while the Terriers only managed six points of of six Spartan turnovers.  

UNCG held a slight shooting advantage in the half making 36 percent of their field goals, 30 percent of their threes and knocking down all four free throw attempts.  Wofford was 29 percent from the floor, 33 percent from three and made three of their four free throw attempts.  

Greensboro came out in the second half and took a 22 point lead, 43-21, just three minutes into play.  Wofford would battle back and cut the lead to 13, 52-39, five minutes later, and eventually pull within 12 points on a Kelly Blake post move and bucket at the 9:36 mark.  Three minutes later Daniella Motley brought the game to 12 points again, but the Spartans regained control of the game with an 8-0 run to take a 72-52 lead with just over four minutes to play in the game.  UNCG took their largest lead, 79-56, with 2:25 before the Terriers cut into the lead in the waning minutes of play to give the game the final score of 80-67.

Behind Morris, April Moorhouse had 12 points for the Terriers by going 4-of-8 from the floor and making all four of her free throw attempts. Daniella Motley also recorded a career-high with ten points  Mahagony William’s eight game double-digit point streak came to an end as she finished with eight points.  Williams grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and a game-high five blocked shots.

For the Spartans Floyd had 15 points and ten rebounds to earn the only double-double of the game.  Her ten rebounds was also a game-high.  Leigh followed with 13 points. Richbow and Janae’ Stevenson chipped in 11 points apiece.   Richbow also had a game-high five assists and four steals.

It was the first time in the 2010-11 season the Terriers dropped a game after getting on the scoreboard first.  All four of their wins Wofford had scored first.

With the loss, Wofford falls to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the SoCon, while UNCG improves to 4-5 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

The Terriers will return to Ben Johnson Arena for their final game before Christmas Break on Tuesday, December 21 against Bucknell with tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
