STATESBORO, Ga. – The Wofford women’s basketball team fell short in Southern Conference action Saturday as the Georgia Southern Eagles recorded a 68-50 win.
Wofford opened scoring in the first half with a two-pointer from freshman Rachel Brittenham and the Georgia Southern Eagles responded with a two of their own. Neither team led by more than three points in the first 15 minutes of play, and with 5:04 remaining in the half, Georgia Southern held a 22-19 advantage.
With 4:48 remaining in the half, a three-pointer from Georgia Southern’s Jamie Navarro sparked a 12 point unanswered run for the Eagles. Wofford struggled to connect offensively until sophomore April Moorhouse connected on a jumper with 41 seconds left, bringing the score to 34-21. The Eagles’ Carolyn Whitney scored on two free throw attempts to secure a 36-21 lead for Georgia Southern heading into halftime.
The Eagles continued to build their advantage in the second half, leading by as many as 27 points with the score at 59-32 and 7:58 remaining to play. The Terriers sank a jumper at the 6:45 mark, which kicked off an eight-point run, bringing the deficit under 20 points at 59-40. Wofford continued to mount a comeback, scoring seven more points to the Eagles’ four within the next two minutes.
The scoring run stalled with 1:54 remaining, as a three-pointer from Georgia Southern’s Carolyn Whitney followed by a good layup sealed the 68-47 win for the Eagles.
Senior Carolyn Whitney led the Eagles with 16 points while junior Jamie Navarro added 15 points in the win, including seven from the free throw line. J'Lisia Ogburn and Jessica Geiger each grabbed six rebounds in the win.
Sophomore April Moorhouse led the Terriers with a double-double, notching 10 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Rachel Brittenham added nine points and senior Natalie Gramblin contributed eight.
The Terriers return home to host Elon in a key Southern Conference game on Monday, February 22. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m. in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
