BOONE, N.C. – Despite a tie score at the half, the Wofford women’s basketball team fell to Appalachian State by a score of 76-62 in Southern Conference action Thursday.
The Mountaineers opened the game with a 5-0 run, but Wofford responded with a run of its own to take a 10-7 lead at the 14:13 mark. The score remained close until a three-pointer from Anna Freeman put Appalachian State up by six points at 21-15.
The Terriers were again able to recover, stepping up on defense to hold the Mountaineers to two points while bringing their own score to 24 to take the one point lead. The teams traded baskets, leaving the Terriers the 26-25 advantage with three seconds left, but a late foul and subsequent made free throw from Appalachian State’s Sam Ramirez evened the score at 26 heading into halftime.
Both teams came out strong in the second half, trading baskets and keeping the score tight until a pair of made free throws by Natalie Gramblin sparked an 8-0 run for the Terriers, giving them the 43-35 advantage with 13:13 remaining to play. The Mountaineers responded with 12 unanswered points of their own, knotting the game at 43, then taking a 47-43 lead.
Wofford tied the score again with 8:54 remaining, but Appalachian State took the momentum and a five point lead, which they built to as many as 10 points, capitalizing on 12 Terrier turnovers and converting the miscues into 18 points. A three-pointer from freshman Rachel Brittenham with 1:03 remaining would be the last field goal for the Terriers as Appalachian State claimed a 76-62 victory.
Sam Ramirez and Canesha Edwards led four Mountaineers in double-digit scoring with 19 points apiece. Ashlen Dewart added 15 and Anna Freeman contributed 14 in the win. Edwards notched a double-double with 10 rebounds and paced the team in steals with six.
Senior Natalie Gramblin and junior Mahagony Williams each recorded 10 points for the Terriers. Seniors Kelly Dwyer and Kathlyn Varno led the team with eight rebounds each and Dwyer recorded six blocks, matching a career-high which she set last season against the Catamounts. As a team the Terriers recorded a season-high 12 blocks.
With the win, Appalachian State improves to 18-10 overall and 14-5 in Southern Conference play while Wofford falls to 7-20 on the season and 5-14 in league games. The Terriers return home for their final regular season match of the season on Saturday, February 27 when they host the Western Carolina Catamounts. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. and the Terrier seniors will be honored prior to the game.
