SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 10-8 by Dayton on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers gave up three runs in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded double that decided the game.
Wofford is 3-4 on the season, while Dayton is 4-3. The Terriers were led by James Foster with three hits and three RBIs, while David Roney and Matt Moore each added three hits and an RBI. The Flyers were led by Brian Blasik with three hits and three runs scored, while Zach Jacob had three RBIs on one hit.
The Flyers opened the game with three unearned runs in the top of the first, which included a two-run double by Jonathan Castine to right center. Wofford got one run back in the bottom of the first when Mac Doyle doubled and has was driven home on a single to right field by Konstantine Diamaduros for a 3-1 score after one inning.
In the bottom of the second, the Terriers loaded the bases with one out and added a run on a ground out by James Foster, but left two stranded for a 3-2 score. Aaron Dunsmore hit a solo home run to right center to lead off the top of the third for Dayton to make it 4-2.
For Wofford in the bottom of the third, Mac Doyle was hit by pitch and Taylor Rozier added a single. David Roney drove in Doyle on a single for a 4-3 game. In the bottom of the fourth, James Foster reached on a single, moved to third on a single by Kyle Behrendt and scored on a balk to tie the game at 4-4.
The Terriers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when a single by Matt Moore scored Landon Bennett and a single by James Foster scored Alex Lee for a 6-4 lead. Wofford added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Mac Doyle singled and Konstantine Diamaduros doubled. Taylor Rozier hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-4 score. In the top of the sixth, the Flyers scored one run on a passed ball and then Dan Welch hit a single to drive in a second run. Dayton had the bases loaded, however a ground out ended the inning with a 7-6 score.
In the bottom of the seventh, a single by James Foster with one out scored David Roney to take an 8-6 lead. Dayton pulled within one run in the top of the eighth when a bases loaded walk made it an 8-7 game. The Flyers left three runners on base at the end of the eighth. Wofford left one runner on in the bottom of the eighth.
Dayton opened the top of the ninth with a single, then Bobby Streisel recorded a strikeout. A single and walk loaded the bases when Zach Jacob hit a double to left center to clear the bases for a 10-8 lead. Two ground outs ended the inning for Dayton. Wofford went one-two-three in the bottom of the ninth.
Wofford starter Gus White went five innings with seven hits and four runs (one earned) allowed along with three strikeouts. Cash Collins went 1.2 innings with two runs scored and one strikeout. Ryan Traylor threw 0.2 innings with one run allowed and a strikeout, while Anthony Rowland also went 0.2 innings with one hit allowed and a strikeout. Bobby Streisel (0-2) threw the ninth and allowed three runs on three hits with one strikeout.
Dayton starter Eric Wagner went three innings with seven hits, three runs allowed and one strikeout. Matt Speckman also went three innings with seven hits, plus four runs scored and three strikeouts. Ian Gardeck threw the final three innings with three hits, one run allowed and five strikeouts.
As part of the Courtyard by Marriott Baseball Classic which was hosted by Wofford and USC Upstate, Taylor Rozier and John Cornely were named to the All-Tournament team.
Wofford returns to the diamond on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm against UNC Asheville at Russell C. King Field.
