DAVIDSON, N.C. – On Sunday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 5-4 by Davidson at Wilson Field. Down 5-0 heading into the eighth inning, the Terriers scored four runs, including three on a homer by Kyle Behrendt, but it was not enough to defeat the Wildcats.
Wofford is 6-8 on the season and 1-2 in the Southern Conference, while Davidson is 11-5 and 2-1 in league play. The Terriers were led by Josh McKinney with three hits on the day and Kyle Behrendt with three RBIs. Davidson’s Seth Freeman and Michael Zeblo each had two hits while five different players had RBIs. Davidson led Wofford ten to nine in hits, but the Terriers had four errors in the contest.
After two scoreless innings, the Wildcats got on the board first in the bottom of the third when Michael Zeblo singled and reached third after an error. A double down the left line scored Zeblo and a sacrifice fly by Danny Weiss scored Zeblo for a 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats added a run in the bottom of the fourth when Tommy Piacenza doubled to left field to score Andrew Barna who had reached base on a walk. In the bottom of the fifth, Davidson was able to add two more runs on a single by Danny Weiss and a sacrifice fly by Andrew Barna for a 5-0 advantage. Both runs in the fifth were unearned due to two Wofford errors.
To start the eighth inning, David Roney doubled and Matt Moore was hit by a pitch. With two out, Kyle Behrendt hit a home run to right field to clear the bases and make it a 5-3 game. Davidson had two players reach in the bottom of the eighth, but both were stranded.
In the top of the ninth, Taylor Rozier led-off with a double and a single by Josh McKinney moved him to third. A sacrifice fly by Konstantine Diamaduros scored Rozier to make it a 5-4 game with one out. With two outs, Matt Moore singled to give Wofford two base runners, however both players were left on base after a ground out to end the game.
Wofford starter Gus White (2-1) went 5.1 innings with nine hits and five runs allowed (two earned) along with one strikeout. Pete Noordsy threw two-thirds of an inning without allowing a base runner. Ryan Traylor went one-two-three in the bottom of the seventh and got the first out of the eighth. Cash Collins threw the final two-thirds of an inning and allowed only one hit.
For Davidson, starter Ryan Overcash (3-0) went the first five scoreless innings with four hits allowed and three strikeouts. Matt Frongello threw three innings with three hits and four runs allowed along with three strikeouts. Andy Bass pitched the ninth and allowed two hits with one strikeout for his second save of the season.
Wofford returns to the field on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm against Presbyterian College in a game to be played in Forest City, N.C. On Friday, Wofford begins a three-game home series with Georgia Southern.
