SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a cold and windy Thursday night, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 16-6 by UNC Asheville at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers had eleven hits, but five unearned runs in the top of third by the Bulldogs broke the game open.
Wofford is 3-5 on the season, while UNC Asheville is 3-4. The Terriers were led by David Roney with three hits and Alex Lee with two hits. The Bulldogs had six innings of work by starter Ryan Dull and Danny Baatz, Robert McInthosh and Mike Vaughan each had three hits on the night.
The Terriers got on the board first when James Foster doubled, which was followed by an RBI double by Kyle Behrendt for a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, a single by Danny Baatz drove in two runs. A Wofford error allowed two more runs to score and the Bulldogs had a 4-1 lead.
Wofford left two on base in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third, Mike Vaughan hit a solo home run to right field. With two out, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with two players hit by pitch and an error. A walk allowed one run to score and then Robert McInthosh hit a grand slam to center field to clear the bases for a 10-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs added a run on a sacrifice fly by Catlin Carter for an 11-1 advantage. UNC Asheville added two more runs in the top of the fifth. With two out, back-to-back doubles scored on run and a single by Beau Zinman drove in the second run for a 13-1 lead. Wofford was able to get one run back in the bottom of the fifth when a ground out by Konstantine Diamaduros allowed one run to score.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the top of the sixth, one on an RBI double by Danny Baatz and another on a single by Justin Schumer, to take a 15-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Wofford opened with a double by Josh McKinney. David Roney singled, which was followed by a single from Alex Lee to score a run. A double by Landon Bennett drove in another run, while a sacrifice fly from James Foster made it a 15-5 game.
At the top of the seventh, Catlin Carter grounded out to score one run for the Bulldogs. Wofford added a run in the bottom of the inning when Neil Robinette was driven in by a ground our by Taylor Rozier. Neither team would add runs in the eighth or ninth innings for the 16-6 final score.
Wofford starter Pete Noordsy (0-2) lasted 2.2 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits with a strikeout. Bobby DeLuria allowed five runs (one earned) on one hit in a third of an inning. Tom Dolinak threw two innings with two runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Jordan Mickleberry went two-thirds of an inning with four hits, two runs and a strikeout. Brandon Yarusi went 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and one run allowed, while Alex Wilson went the final two innings with three strikeouts and only one hit allowed.
UNC Asheville starter Ryan Dull (2-0) went six innings with ten hits and five runs allowed along with three strikeouts. Grieg Harrington went an inning with a strikeout and one run allowed. Tyler Coyle and Dan Weller each went an inning without allowing a hit or run.
Wofford returns to the diamond on Friday evening at 6:00 pm against Gardner-Webb at Russell C. King Field. On Saturday and Sunday, Wofford will host St. Peter’s in a pair of games.
