Baseball Falls in 15 Innings to Gardner-Webb 4-3

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a marathon 15 inning contest on Friday night, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 4-3 by Gardner-Webb at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers had a 3-0 lead after three innings, but the Runnin’ Bulldogs tied it in the seventh and won on a double in the top of the fifteenth inning.

Wofford is 3-6 on the season, while Gardner-Webb is 3-7 overall. The Terriers were led by Alex Lee with three hits, while Landon Bennett and James Foster both added two hits. Gardner-Webb was led by Kurt Fulginiti and O.J. McFarland with three hits each.

After a scoreless first inning, Wofford took a 1-o lead when Landon Bennett hit a single, moved to second on a walk by Josh McKinney, then stole third and came home on an error by the catcher on the throw to third base. With one out in the bottom of the third, singles by Alex Lee and Kyle Behrendt were followed by a double down the left line by Mac Doyle to score Lee. Konstantine Diamaduros reached on an error that enabled Kyle Behrendt to score for a 3-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb opened the fourth inning with a double by Kurt Fulginiti. Josh Drewery reach on an error. A wild pitch allowed one run to score. Two more singles for the Runnin’ Bulldogs added one run to make it a 3-2 game. Gardner-Webb left three on base to end the inning.

Wofford had two singles in the bottom of the sixth, but stranded both runners. In the top of the seventh, Adam McFarland led-off with a double down the right line. A bunt moved McFarland to third and a single up the middle by Aaron Miller scored the tying run before a double-play ended the inning.

The Terriers left one on base in the ninth, then the Runnin’ Bulldogs left one on in the top of the tenth. Wofford did not have a hit or base runner in the next five innings. Gardner-Webb left two on base in the eleventh and one each in the twelfth and thirteenth innings. In the top of the fifteenth, Josh Drewery opened with a double. A double by Ty Boyles scored Drewery for a 4-3 lead. Wofford reached base in the bottom of the 15th on a walk, but stranded the runner.

Wofford starter John Cornely went six innings with seven hits allowed, two runs and seven strikeouts. Anthony Rowland, Ryan Traylor and Cash Collins combined for an inning of work in the seventh with two hits and one run allowed. Drew Sheridan (1-1) went 7.1 innings with seven hits allowed, one run and five strikeouts in the loss. Bobby Streisel got the final two outs of the game with one strikeout.

Gardner-Webb starter Brett Stackhouse threw six innings with nine hits, three runs allowed and four strikeouts. Kyle Paeplow went an inning with one strikeout. Adam Izokovic (1-1) went the final eight innings with one hit and six strikeouts to earn the win.

Wofford returns to the diamond on Saturday 5:00 pm for the first of two games against St. Peter’s. The two teams will also play at 1:00 pm on Sunday.
