GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 7-5 by UNC Greensboro at the UNCG Baseball Stadium on Friday night. The Terriers had a 5-4 lead in the eighth, but three runs by the Spartans on one hit, two walks and an error in the bottom of the eighth gave them the lead and the victory.
Wofford is 11-26 on the season and 4-12 in the Southern Conference. UNC Greensboro is 17-21 overall and 4-14 in the conference. The Terriers were led by David Roney with three hits and Konstantine Diamaduros with two RBIs. The Spartans were led by Harry Slade and Ed Jayjack each with two RBIs.
In the bottom of the first, Chris Barker gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead with a solo home run over the scoreboard in right field. Wofford answered in the top of the second when Landon Bennett walked and a double to right by David Roney moved him to third. A ground-out by Konstantine Diamaduros to short scored Bennett to tie the game.
A single up the middle by Clark Wise scored Roney to give the Terriers a lead. Wofford loaded the bases with two out when Kyle Behrendt was hit by a pitch to score another run for a 3-1 score, however the bases were loaded to end the half inning.
Wofford left two on base in the third, while the Spartans left one on base in their half of the third. After the Terriers went down in order in the top of the fourth, UNCG loaded the bases with nobody out. A double with one out by Harry Slade cleared the bases to give the Spartans a 4-3 advantage.
Both teams left one runner on base in the fifth inning. For the Spartans in the bottom of the sixth, Kris Richards led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, but two runners were left on base to end the inning.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Kyle Behrendt hit a triple down the right field line. A triple to left center by Mac Doyle tied the game at four. Doyle was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice, but back-to-back singles to David Roney and Konstantine Diamaduros added a run and the Terriers took a 5-4 lead at the stretch.
The Spartans had runners on the corners with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but both were left on base after a fly ball to end the inning. Wofford went in order in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, the first two batters for the Spartans walked. An error on a fielder’s choice allowed a run to score and tie the game. With two on and two out, a triple by Ed Jayjack down the right line gave the Spartans a 7-5 lead.
Wofford headed to the top of the ninth and with two outs, Landon Bennett hit a single up the middle and David Roney added a single. Both runners moved on a wild pitch, but a strikeout by Konstantine Diamaduros ended the game.
For the Terriers, starter Tom Dolinak threw 5.1 innings with seven hits and four runs allowed with four strikeouts. Cash Collins went an inning with only one hit allowed. Bobby Streisel threw two-thirds of an inning with one hit and one strikeout. Pete Noordsy (0-4) walked the only batter he faced. Drew Sheridan worked an inning and gave up one hit with two strikeouts.
UNC Greensboro starter Blake Hassebrock went just two innings with three hits and three runs with four strikeouts. Colby Hyatt (5-3) went the final seven innings with seven hits allowed two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Wofford continues the three-game conference series at UNC Greensboro on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
