GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team scored five runs in the seventh and ninth innings on the way to a 17-9 win over UNC Greensboro at the UNCG Baseball Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Kyle Behrendt was five-for-five on the day and hit for the cycle.
Wofford is 12-26 on the season and 5-12 in the Southern Conference. UNC Greensboro is 17-22 overall and 4-15 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Kyle Behrendt with five hits and James Foster with four hits, while Mac Doyle had five RBIs. The Spartans were led by Corey Overholtzer with two hits along with five RBIs.
The Terriers opened the game with James Foster at third and Kyle Behrendt at first after each hit singles. A double steal gave Wofford the first run of the game. A single to right field by Landon Bennett drove in Behrendt for a 2-0 score.
In the bottom of the second, the Spartans added base runners on a single and error, but both were stranded. Matt Moore added a solo home run over the left field wall in the top of the second for a 3-0 lead.
After two walks and a bunt, the Spartans loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the second. A sacrifice fly by Alex Frederick drove in one run, while a sacrifice fly by Drew Gehringer made it a 3-2 game. The bases were loaded when the inning ended for the Spartans.
Kyle Behrendt hit a double to right center to lead off the top of the third. He stole third and a sacrifice fly by Mac Doyle drove in the run for a 4-2 lead. The Spartans had their first two batters reach base on walks and moved into scoring position on a bunt. A ground-out by Kris Richards scored one run to make it a 4-3 game after three innings.
Wofford added runners on the corners with one out in the top of the fourth with a walk by Clark Wise and a single from James Foster, his third of the day. A sacrifice bunt by Alex Lee scored Wise and a single to left center from Kyle Behrendt drove in Foster for a 6-3 lead.
Neither team was able to add runs in the fifth or sixth innings. To open the seventh, Kyle Behrendt hit a home run to right center to make it 7-3. Wofford added singles from Mac Doyle and David Roney, plus a walk by Konstantine Diamaduros, to load the bases with one out. A pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Michael McDonnell drove in one run and a walk by Matt Moore loaded the bases again. James Foster then hit a double down the left line to clear the bases and give the Terriers an 11-3 lead at the stretch.
To lead off the eighth, Kyle Behrendt tripled to left center to complete the cycle with his fifth hit of the day. He was driven in on a ground-out by Mac Doyle for a 12-3 advantage. The Spartans added a run on a balk in the bottom of the eighth and a double by Corey Overholtzer drove in a run for a 12-5 score, but the bases were loaded at the end of the eighth for the Spartans.
With rain falling in the ninth, the Terriers loaded the bases with nobody out on two walks and a hit by pitch. A ground-out by Alex Lee drove in one run and a walk to Kyle Behrendt loaded the bases again. Mac Doyle then tripled to center field to clear the bases. David Roney added an RBI single to bring in Doyle for a 17-5 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, the Spartans loaded the bases with two singles and an error. With two outs, Corey Overholtzer then hit a home run over the right center fence for a 17-9 final score.
For the Terriers, starter J.D. Osborne went 2.2 innings and allowed three runs on two hits with seven walks and two strikeouts. Pete Noordsy (1-4) threw 1.2 innings with two hits allowed and a strikeout. Ryan Traylor went two thirds of an inning and allowed one hit. Cash Collins had two strikeouts and no hits in 1.1 innings. Bobby Streisel added 1.1 innings with two runs scored on three hits and two strikeouts. Anthony Rowland closed the game’s final 1.1 innings with three hits and four unearned runs allowed with three strikeouts.
UNC Greensboro’s Greg Smith (4-2) made his first start of the season and went 2.2 innings with four runs and six hits allowed with three strikeouts. Wes McBride lasted 0.2 inning with one hit allowed. Zach Furl also went two-thirds of an inning with one hit allowed. Tyler Hollstegge threw the next 2.2 innings and allowed three hits and five runs with one strikeout. Alex Shelton went 1.1 innings with two hits and three runs allowed and two strikeouts. Kris Richards moved from third to the mound for the ninth and allowed three runs on two hits with one strikeout.
The win was the first for Wofford at UNC Greensboro since the 2004 season and the 17 runs were the most scored this season by Wofford. The Terriers complete the three-game conference series at UNC Greensboro on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
