Baseball Takes Series With 10-3 Win At UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – With four runs in the sixth inning, the Wofford College baseball team defeated UNC Greensboro 10-3 at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Sunday afternoon to win the weekend series. The Terriers had twelve hits in the game and John Cornely picked up the win with ten strikeouts in six innings of work.

Wofford is 13-26 on the season and 6-12 in the Southern Conference. UNC Greensboro is 17-23 overall and 4-16 in the conference. It is the first time Wofford has won a three-game conference series against the Spartans. The Terriers were led by Kyle Behrendt with three hits and David Roney and Konstantine Diamaduros with two RBIs each. The Spartans had six different players with one hit each.

In the top of the first, the Spartans walked the bases loaded with two outs and a single by David Roney through the right side scored two runs. UNC Greensboro opened the game with a double by Harry Slade. With the bases loaded with two out after two walks, a third walk scored a run. A strikeout ended the inning with three left on base for the Spartans.

With runners on second and third, a passed ball allowed James Foster to score and the Terriers took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second. After John Cornely struck out three batters in the bottom of the second, Wofford loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third. Clark Wise walked to bring in a run and a single to left by Matt Moore scored a run as well for a 5-1 lead.

After a scoreless fourth, with runners on the corners and two out in the bottom of the fifth, James Foster made a diving catch in left center to end the inning. Wofford opened the top of the sixth with a solo home run by Alex Lee to left center, his second home run of the season. Kyle Behrendt added a single and stole second before a double down the left line by Mac Doyle drove him in for a 7-1 lead. David Roney was hit by a pitch and Konstantine Diamaduros hit a triple to left center to score two runners and give the Terriers a 9-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh with one out, the Spartans had back-to-back solo home runs by Chris Barker to right center and Corey Overholtzer to right field for a 9-3 score. The next two batters walked but a double play ended the inning for UNCG.

The Terriers were retired in order on three ground-outs in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, the Spartans loaded the bases with two walks and a hit by pitch, but a fly ball to left ended the inning.

Wofford added a run in the top of the ninth when Clark Wise reached on first and moved to third on a single by James Foster. Foster got caught in a run down and Wise broke for home. Wise beat the throw to the plate and Foster safely returned to first for a 10-3 score. The Spartans left one on base in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

For the Terriers, starter John Cornely (3-6) threw six innings with four hits and one run allowed with a career-high ten strikeouts. Cash Collins gave up two runs on two hits in a third of an inning. Gus White worked two-thirds of an inning and did not allow a hit. Ryan Traylor added two-thirds of an inning without a hit. Pete Noordsy picked up one out to end the eighth. Drew Sheridan threw the ninth and had one strikeout.

UNC Greensboro’s Matt Parish (1-2) went only 1.2 innings and allowed three hits and three runs with one strikeout and four walks. Blake Hassebrock threw two-thirds of an inning with one hit and two runs scored. Warren Slack went the remaining 6.2 innings with eight hits allowed and five runs with five strikeouts.

The Terriers will travel to Forest City, N.C. on Wednesday night for a contest against Gardner-Webb before returning home for a three-game series against Elon beginning on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
