GREENVILLE, S.C. – In the first game of a three game series, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 14-6 by Furman at Latham Stadium on Friday night. The Terriers outhit the Paladins thirteen to twelve, but Furman used four runs in the fourth and six in the fifth inning for the victory.
Wofford moves to 17-33 on the season and 9-16 in the Southern Conference, remaining in eighth place. Furman is 14-33 overall and 6-19 in the conference. The Terriers were led by James Foster with three hits and Kyle Behrendt with two RBIs. The Paladins were led by Aaron Thompkins with three hits and Dylan Cole with five RBIs.
The Terriers opened the game with a single by James Foster. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Lee and scored on a single to right field by Kyle Behrendt. Furman answered when Will Muzika reached on an error that scored Will Owens from third. A double by Will Miller scored Muzika and a RBI single from Reese Wade made it 3-1 at the end of the first inning.
After scoreless second and third innings, Konstantine Diamaduros hit a solo home run to right field for a 3-2 game in the top of the fourth. Furman added two runs on a home run by Dylan Cole in the bottom of the fourth to left field for a 5-2 lead. Another run scored on a bunt by Will Owens and Will Muzika added an RBI single to increase the lead to 7-2.
In the top of the fifth, Alex Lee walked, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. A single through the right side by Kyle Behrendt scored Lee to cut the lead to 7-3. Furman added a three-run home run by Dylan Cole to left center to extend the advantage to 10-3 in the fifth. The Paladins added a run on a single down the right line by Aaron Thompkins and Brian Harrison reached on an error to bring in another run for a 13-3 lead.
Wofford had a single from Konstantine Diamaduros and a double by Clark Wise to add one run in the top of the sixth. With two on and two out, James Foster added a single to score a second run for a 13-5 score. Furman had a solo home run by Aaron Thompkins in the bottom of the seventh to increase the lead to 14-5.
Heading to the top of the eighth, Landon Bennett had a double and was driven home by a single from David Roney for a 14-6 score. After the Paladins were retired in order in the bottom of the eighth, James Foster and Alex Lee added hits in the top of the ninth but both were left on base at the end of the contest.
For the Terriers, Tom Dolinak (0-5) started the game and went 4.1 innings with nine hits and ten runs scored with six strikeouts. Anthony Rowland threw the final 3.2 innings and allowed three hits and four runs with two strikeouts.
Furman starter Daniel Stallsmith (3-2) went 5.2 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits with one strikeout. Matt Plate threw 3.1 innings with four hits and one run allowed along with one strikeout.
The Terriers will continue the series at Furman on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
