GREENVILLE, S.C. – In the second game of a three game series, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated by Furman 12-1.
Wofford moves to 17-34 on the season and 9-17 in the Southern Conference, remaining in eighth place. Furman is 15-33 overall and 7-19 in the conference. The Terriers were limited to only four hits in the game and Alex Lee scored the only run. Furman's Will Muzika had three hits and three RBIs.
The Terriers opened the game with a scoreless first and second inning. In the top of the third Matt Moore led off with a double but was left stranded. In the bottom of the third JD Osborne struck out the first two batters and caught a line drive up the middle to end the inning.
Furman got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Will Muzika led off with a single and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Will Miller. The next batter Paul Nitto hit a two run home run to left center to push the Paladin lead to 3-0. The Paladins added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth scoring two runs on one hit and an error to make the score 5-0.
The Terriers got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Alex Lee reached base after being hit by pitch then advanced to third base on a wild pitch and passed ball. Lee scored on a sacrifice fly by Mac Doyle. In the bottom of the sixth relief pitcher Bobby Streisel retired the Paladins in order including two strikeouts to keep the score at 5-1.
After a scoreless top of the seventh inning Furman added six runs on six hits in the bottom of the seventh to push their lead to 11-1.
In the bottom of the eighth Furman added a run on a solo home run by Will Muzika. Wofford was held scoreless in the top of the ninth inning to finish the game.
For the Terriers, JD Osborne (3-4) started the game and went 4.1 innings with four hits and five runs scored with four strikeouts. Bobby Streisel pitched 2.1 innings of relief with six hits and six runs scored with two strikeouts. Pete Noordsy pitched 1.1 innings of relief with one hit and one run scored.
Furman starter Ian Perry (4-6) went eight innings and allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Kevin Gottlieb pitched a scoreless ninth inning of relief.
The Terriers will complete the series at Furman on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
