Baseball Comeback Falls Short Against Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – In the final game of a three game series, the Wofford College baseball team scored three runs in the eighth inning to take a two run lead but the comeback fell short as Furman defeated the Terriers 11-10.

Wofford moves to 17-35 on the season and 9-18 in the Southern Conference, remaining in eighth place. Furman is 16-33 overall and 8-19 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Konstantine Diamaduros with three hits and three RBI’s
 
The Terriers opened the game with a lead off hit by James Foster. Foster scored two batters later on an RBI double by Konstantine Diamaduros. In the bottom of the first inning Furman got on the board when Will Muzika hit a two run home run to right center to give the Paladins a 2-1 lead.  
 
After a scoreless second inning, the Paladins added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning when Brian Harrison scored on an RBI double by Reese Wade to make the score 3-1.
 
In the top of the fourth the Terriers had a two out rally. Landon Bennett reached base on a single then moved to third on a ground rule double by David Roney.  The next batter Clark Wise hit a single up the middle to score Bennett and Roney to tie the score at 3. Wise moved to third base on a single by Alex Lee and scored on an RBI single from Matt Moore to give the Terriers a 4-3 lead.
 
Furman tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when J.B. Jenkins scored on a double by Rob Fondu. The next batter Will Owens hit a two run home run to left field to give the Paladins a 6-4 lead.
 
After a scoreless top of the fifth inning for the Terriers, Furman added to their lead with a leadoff home run by Brian Harrison in the bottom of the fifth. Reese Wade reached base on a walk and scored on a double by Dylan Cole to make the score 8-4.
 
In the top of the sixth inning the Terriers loaded the bases and scored a run by David Roney on an RBI fielder’s choice by James Foster. Alex Lee scored on an RBI single by Kyle Behrendt to make the score 8-6. James Foster scored on an RBI single by Konstantine Diamaduros to cut the Paladin lead to one.
 
Wofford started the seventh inning with a leadoff double by Landon Bennett. Clark Wise bunted Bennett over to third base but the Terriers were unable to score Bennett keeping the score at 8-7. Cash Collins retired the Paladins order in the bottom of the seventh.
 
The game was delayed at the start of the eighth inning due to lightning. After a one hour and fifty minute rain delay the game resumed at 5:13 PM.
 
After the rain delay Matt Moore led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by James Foster. After Kyle Behrendt was hit by a pitch, Moore scored to tie the game off a RBI single by Konstatine Diamaduros. Mac Doyle hit an RBI single to score Behrendt to give the Terriers a 9-8 lead. Diamaduros scored on an RBI single by Landon Bennett to give the Terriers a 10-8 lead.
 
In the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs Brian Harrison hit a three run home run to left field to give the Paladins an 11-10 lead going to the ninth inning.
 
Alex Lee led off the ninth inning with a single. Lee moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Moore. Furman pitcher Daniel Stallsmith struck out the final two batters to end the game.
 
For the Terriers, John Cornely (3-7) started the game and went 4.2 innings with nine hits and eight runs scored with five strikeouts. Cash Collins pitched 2.1 innings of relief without giving up a hit and striking out one. Drew Sheridan pitched one inning of relief and allowed three runs on three hits and striking out one.

Furman starter Bobby Lyne (2-2) went 4 innings and allowed four run on eight hits with three strikeouts. Stephen Gary pitched 1.2 innings of relief and allowed three runs on three hits. Jay Friedman pitched 1.1 innings of relief and allowed one run on one hit.  Matt Plate faced one batter in the eighth inning and issued a walk. Kevin Gottlieb pitched .1 innings of relief and allowed two runs on two hits. Daniel Stallsmith pitched 1.2 innings of relief and allowed two hits with two strikeouts.

The Terriers will return to action on Friday, May, 21 for the first of a three game series against Southern Conference foe Appalachian State at Russell C. King Field on the Wofford College Campus.
