Box Score FLORENCE, S.C. – The women’s soccer team overcame a two goal deficit in the competition against Francis Marion, scoring the two tying goals in the span of a minute with only six minutes left in the match, but gave up a devastating goal in the second overtime. The match ended in a 3-2 result, giving the Terriers a 2-2 record on the season, while the Patriots improve to 1-4 on the year.

The Patriots were able to take the first advantage of the match in the 28th minute with a goal by Kiley Williams, off a ball pushed ahead in the center of the field from Rebecca Nelson. The Terriers earned their first goalscoring opportunity in the 30th minute when senior Rachael Blackburn ripped a shot from the right wing, only to have it saved by FMU’s goalkeeper Lauren Vetock. #Maggie O’Brien# followed suit with a shot of her own in the 33rd minute, but Vetock was able to spoil the attempt.

Three minutes later freshman Alex Kachulis streamed a shot toward the goal from outside the top of the 18’, but Vetock protected the net successfully once again. Late in the first half Chelsea Ashworth was able to put an attempt on frame, but it was saved by the Patriot’s keeper. Entering halftime, the Terriers trailed 1-0 after being able to put four shots on frame.

FMU was able to double their lead in the 10th minute of the second half after Adrienna Osorio-McKenna scored from inside the box off an assist from Jordan Allen and Kiley Williams. The Terriers were able to hold off all other attacks for the rest of regulation.

The squad was able to keep cool heads and present a formidable offensive attack throughout the next 25 minutes of play, with two shots by Blackburn and a shot from Anne Phillips until finally in the 85th minute freshman Amanda Morris put the Terriers back into the game with her first goal of the season from an assist by Sydney Reed.

With renewed spirits, the Terriers kept the fire coming and Reed forced a header in the back of the netting off a cross from Blackburn with only five minutes left in regulation. The score tied the game 2-2, and sent the match into overtime with dramatic fashion.

Running on uplifted momentum, Kachulis was able to let a shot attempt fly in the opening 30 seconds of the first overtime, but the shot was saved by Vetock. Two minutes into the first overtime, Erika Christensen delivered a crucial save off William’s shot attempt at the top of the box.

With only a minute left in the first overtime play, Emily Bougas, who delivered the game winning shot in overtime just two days prior, pushes a header toward the Patriot frame, but just barely missed as it clanked off the crossbar.

In the first minute of the second overtime, the Patriot’s Rebecca Nelson knocked in the game winner to end the match in double overtime.

The Terriers managed to get off 14 shots throughout the afternoon, with nine shots being on target. The Terriers return to action on Snyder Field next Sunday, Sept. 5, where they face USC Upstate at 2:00 pm.
