Terriers Nearly Sink the Naval Academy

ANNAPOLIS, MD- After taking a one goal advantage early in the match, the Terriers give up a goal in the last seconds of the first half off a penalty kick due to a red card inside the box. The men’s soccer team was forced to play with only ten men throughout the entire second half, and was unable to defend the Midshipmen’s one player advantage as they gave up two more goals, losing 3-1. The Terriers drop to 0-1 on the season and the Midshipmen improve to 1-0.

The men’s soccer program came out with a fierce tenacity, dominating every offensive category in the first half. The Terriers were able to shoot on seven different occasions during the first 45 minutes of play compared to the Naval Academy’s three shots. The squad also dominated in corner kicks as they had six opportunities from the corner compared to Navy’s zero.

Wilson Hood led the team in shots (3) and had the Terriers lone goal. After barely missing a shot wide in the first five minutes, the forward redeemed himself with a goal in the 14th minute. Bryan Eddy was able to dribble through traffic to deliver the cross to Hood, who feed the ball straight into the left corner.

The Terriers kept the attack coming with two separate shots from Andrew Eppelsheimer and shots apiece by Eddie Nam and Bryan Eddy. The team also produced five different corner kick opportunities during this time, but was unable to take advantage of any.

With only seconds left in the half, the Midshipmen were awarded a penalty kick after Eddie Nam committed a foul inside the box and was ejected from the game with a red card. Navy’s David Jackson lined up the kick and pushed it past goalkeeper Andrew Drennan to tie the game 1-1 entering half time.

Starting the second half the Terriers were forced to play a different formation and strategy with only being allowed to have ten men on the field as a result of the red card. Even playing with the disadvantage, the squad applied pressure to the Navy net with shots from Blake Gardner and Paulo Bonfim within the first ten minutes of the second half.

In the 55th minute the Midshipmen’s Blake Busse was able to play a hard cross into the box that was punched away from Drennan, but landed in the feet of a wide open Dave Arnold. With the score the Naval Academy to a 2-1 lead. Ten minutes later, Navy was able to put the final blow on with a goal from Sam Miller.

The Terriers finished the game with 11 shots, while Navy only had 10. The men’s soccer team was also able to beat out Navy with shots on goal, having five compared to their three. The team tallied eight total corner kicks. Navy had zero corner kicks.

The men’s soccer team will stay in Maryland for the next couple of days as they prepare to face the University of Maryland Baltimore County at 4:00 pm this Saturday, September 4th.
