DAVIDSON, N.C. – Wofford’s Anne Phillips scored a goal in the second half, and set up a goal for Sydney Reed in the last minutes of regulation to send the match into overtime against conference foe and defending SoCon champions, Davidson. The match ended in a 2-2 draw after a scoreless double overtime, sending Wofford to a 5-3-1 (0-1-1 SoCon) record. Davidson records their second draw of conference play and grabs a 4-4-2 (0-0-2 SoCon) record.
Coach Kiah’s team forced a heavy offensive attack in the match, forcing Davidson’s goalkeeper Christy Carry to scramble for nine saves. The Terriers took 19 shots, compared to Davidson’s ten and doubled the Wildcats shots on goals, taking 11 shots on frame, while Davidson had four.
Kimberly Cohn made the first start of her career against the Wildcats and was forced to face a penalty kick in the first 20 minutes of play. Davidson drew a foul in the box and was awarded the penalty kick at the 19:28 mark. Davidson’s Allison Drutchas took the penalty kick, driving the shot right, inches past Cohn’s outstretched fingers.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 advantage and kept the one goal margin throughout the second half despite shots from multiple players from the Wofford lineup. Phillips and Rachael Blackburn had shots stretch wide, and Nikki Siebert and Emily Bougas forced Carry to save their attempts in the 33rd and 36th minutes of the first half.
In the 17th minute of the second half Anne Phillips knocked in her third goal of the season, making the most of a rebounded shot by Lauren Cozzarelli. Cozzarelli was awarded the assist and the Terriers evened the score at 1-1.
Three minutes later, the Wildcats were able to take the lead again, benefitting off an own goal by the Terriers. Davidson was given a free shot from the left side of the field, crossing the ball into the box. The ball deflected off a Terrier player and bounced into the back of the net. The Wildcats took the 2-1 lead in the 20th minute of the second half.
The Terriers kept pressure on the Wildcat goal, forcing Carry to make three more saves before the last four minutes of the game when Anne Phillips set up a brilliant assist to Sydney Reed who easily rolled the ball into the goal, forcing the equalizer and tying the game 2-2. The end of regulation was called shortly after and the match was sent into overtime.
The Terriers produced four total shots in the twenty minute double overtime, having one shot saved, another blocked by a Wildcat defender, and the other two shot high and wide. The Wofford defense didn’t allow Davidson any shots throughout both overtimes, and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Terriers play their first home conference game October 1st. The match will be held on Snyder Field at 7:00 pm.
